applying to too many colleges

if u apply to 20 colleges, will it hurt ur chances of getting into each?
if so, what wud be a good # to apply to
i am a junior, applying for colleges fall 2011
i'm looking at places like berkeley, carnegie mellon, johns hopkins, columbia, caltech etc.

It would be safer to apply to too many than too little. But 20? I’m not sure if it would hurt chances, but why would you apply to so many?

I think that you should try to narrow down your list. Applying to several colleges won’t hurt your chances, but it’s generally advisable to only apply to colleges that you wouldn’t mind going to. Make sure that you can afford to pay for all the application fees as well.

It certainly cannot hurt chances to apply to more.

However you should be applied to a good diversity of school calibers. Applying to each of the nations top 20 universities is NOT a good idea. Applying to 6 of them and applying to 10 schools that are matches/low reaches and applying to 4 schools that should be safety schools is a much better approach (these numbers are totally random, but you get the point).

The idea is to give yourself the most opportunities. Applying to a ton of top tier schools when they are high reaches for you is not exactly maximizing your opportunities.

Just to let you know, I applied to 16…an got 16 rejections…
