Applying to US from Canada

Hi, I was wondering if anyone out there knew much about getting in to American Law Schools coming from a Canadian Undergraduate degree? I'm in 12th Grade now and trying to decide which Canadian university to attend for my undergraduate degree (don't want to leave the country yet!), but I want to choose a school that would be viewed favorably by American law schools (my dream is to go to Harvard or Yale, of course). I know not many Americans have even heard of most Canadian universities, but will this affect my application, or do only grades and LSAT scores really matter? I have marks above 95% in all my grade 12 classes and will likely be accepted to McGill University and Queen's University, which are my top choices, though I have also applied to University of Toronto and Dalhousie. I would love to get some advice from anyone who has experience with or even just an opinion on the matter. Thank you very much for reading this and please reply!

If you have a high LSAT score and an excellent GPA when you apply, you will have a chance from any of the universities mentioned. Congratulations on your grades in h/s. Keep up the good work. While aspiring to Harvard or Yale is admirable, it’s early to be determining not only a career path but also what law schools you wish to attend. You have lots of time! Enjoy your undergrad, work hard, study something you enjoy and if you are still interested in law school by the time you’re in third year, investigate your options at that point. Remember to research the requirements if you attend a U.S. school and want to return to practice in Canada. Best of luck to you!

If you are still interested in law school after your undergraduate, don’t ignore Canadian law schools like McGill and University of Toronto. Many big US law firms also recruit there and the costs of attending Canadian law schools are about one quarter of the US law schools.

cbreeze, although you’re right that some Canadian law schools are less expensive than some in the U.S., U of T’s tuition and a couple of others are in the $23,000+ range now for Canadians and $33,000 for internationals. I agree that any Canadian student would be wise to seriously consider attending a Canadian school, as well as practicing in Canada rather than in the U.S.

While Americans might not have heard of some Canadian universities, be assured that American law schools have heard of the ones on your list! They are in the same industry-which is academia- so they know of each other.
