Appointment Presentation

^^^nah, I wasn’t being THAT hard on him- ;)

Interestingly, our BGO did not make the presentation either. He is a retired Captain and could not do it on the appointed night. He asked a reserve officer to make the presentaiton in his stead.

I believe my son received the appointment package; I think. Not sure to be honest.

TALK to your BGO and ASK him/her how to accomodate the circumstances.

My son had very little contact with his BGO. He received his LOA before he was interviewed. The BGO that came to our house was filling in for someone else that was in the process of moving. No matter who makes the presentation, it is a great honor and will be very impressive at the graduation.
On another note, my son was also the first from his school to receive an appointment to any of the service academies. Since then a young lady classmate of his has also received her appointment. Both received appointments from USAFA and USNA. She is going to USAFA. He has not made up his mind yet. If they both go to USAFA, they will have gone to school together since 6th grade.

Has anyone ever had their Congressman make the presentation (perhaps with the BGO) at a senior awards ceremony?

No, have not had that pleasure, although I would welcome it if it could be arranged.

Navy 2010,

Do you think that if a Congressman, BGO and a High School are “all good” with a Congressman making the appointment presentation at a seniors awards ceremony, that the USNA would also be OK with it…given all the protocol treads above?

Absolutely. There are dozens of ways for this to be coordinated, e.g. the BGO introducing the MOC [in the same way they might introduce a military acquaintance or family member] to make the actual presentation. [Except int he case of a MOC, I’m sure they would want to grab the microphone and say a few words.] Or, the MOC might just do it on their own. The objective is to highlight the Academy for what it is: an outstanding opportunity.

I will second what Bill has posted.

What you might want to do first, however, is to check with your school- some will allow short presentations, while others will not. I was asked last year to cover for a BGO to present an appointment, and when I got to the school [very large graduating class] I was informed that they do not allow presentors to speak- they [the school host] introduce the presentor, introduce the award recepient, I hand over the appointment, smile for the camera, and that’s it!!! Had a whole little presentation prepared as well!

So before asking your MOC, check with the school first and make sure it is OK with them. Also ask, ahead of time, what the time limitations are, so that no one is embarrassed!

Did you really mean to include time limitations and congressman talking in the same thought??? :)

2010 …your recent post was going down like prune juice and oatmeal until you said …

Who are you kidding! W/ all respect for your generous commitment, diligence and self-recognition as world’s preeminent BGO, “little” is not in your vocabulary nor your communiques.

I’m betting that presentation was leather-bound, a thousand or so initial printings just for family and audience members of course, and translated into 14 languages including pig-latin (for benefit of yours truly, I’m sure and flattered ;))

Title? “Peace and War: My Life as a BGO” Made the Senate healthbill look like a Superman comic book.

Hey, jk. Keep up the good work. The admiral loves ya. :)

LOL!!! Well, never said succinct was my strong suit! Ah, but it is a work of beauty!!!

how did you know??? ;)

Exactly! Thus, the recommendation to check first!!!

The school may NOT be as “welcoming” as our new proud parents think!
Many will not be willing to have any political overtones to the event, or want to be viewed as swaying left or right!

But if the MOC is a member of the tea party, heck! you never know! ;)
