appropriate essay topic?

I want my common app essay to display how I think about things in an original and unique way. At the same time, I want to write about something I feel strongly about.

So I had this idea to write about how, a few years ago, I decided not to press charges against an 18 year old boy who raped me; rather, I told his parents to please have him get therapy or psychological help. I did this because 1) I did not want to ruin this boys life like he ruined mine and 2) I forgave him and 3)because I am a problem solver, and having a mentally disturbed 18 year old boy in jail was going to create problems, not solve any.

I was also going to mention how some people told me I was crazy for not pressing charges and how some were mad at me, but how the points I listed above compelled me to take the action that I did.

Appropriate? Inappropriate? I figured the R word might be risky business to a college admissions officer.

I’m not an admissions officer but I do think this would be a compelling topic for your essay and would tell AOs something about how you think which is, after all, the point of the essay. I would not dwell on the details of the rape. Instead focus on the aftermath and how you approached the issue of pressing charges vs. getting him psychological help. You’ll want the committee to see you as resilient as opposed to damaged.

Very interesting topic but like the comment above said, don’t focus too much on the rape details.

I feel like it’s a sympathy story. Sorry.
