Hello,

I graduated in biology in 2010, now working in oncology clinical trials (as a coordinator). Recently decided I want to get a masters in biostatistics, and that I'd love to go abroad for my studies.

Problem is, the only program that could work for me is in University of Glasgow's MSc program, which is only 1 year! Is that going to look bad on my resume compared to if I stayed here in the states and did a typical 2 year program?

Just in case anyone's curious --- Glasgow is my only choice because all the other programs are either:
Not taught in English
Require that you are proficient in a programming language
Require more pre-reqs than I have time to take (I only have time for one class, linear algebra)
Are online-only
Have closed down....etc etc.

I welcome your thoughts. Thank you,

Why do you want to go abroad for a program?

Most MA programs in statistics are 1-year, 30-credit programs; most MA/MS programs in biostatistics are 2-year programs. I’m not sure why that is, but given that, I don’t think people will look down on a one-year master’s in statistics as long as it has all of the standard classes that a statistician will be expected to have taken.

You say you only have time to take one class, linear algebra. I am assuming that you’ve already taken cal I-III? Most U.S. statistics programs (but not biostats) are one year and only require cal I-III and linear algebra.

Hi juillet. I want to go abroad mainly to broaden my experiences and be more connected with the world. But I do worry about understanding instructors with different accents and that they might pack more material into a smaller amount of time (coming from a bio background instead of a math background, that would be terrifying).

Yes, I took calc I-III my freshman/sophomore years (6 years ago now, yikes). I did about average…3.0 / 3.0 / 2.7.

Interesting, I always assumed the regular stats programs were also two years. I’m set with doing biostats though.

Does this really have 190 views with 1 reply? Seems like people would just not click…it’s a pretty straightforward title!

People click to read for their own information and for entertainment. The title is very broad and could apply to any program. You don’t really ask any question, but don’t expect dozens of experts in your field to be waiting here at any given time.
