I thought Asian-Americans were usually taller than Asians.. like there's something in the water or something heh. I'm a giant (5'5") compared to everyone else back there.

there's probably too much hormone in the milk. damn inorganic and polluted foods :(. that's what all the Asians parents say O_o

gee i'm one of those short asians 5'4'' expected to be 5'7''
my dad is 5'6 and mom is 4'10, so that explains everything

sagar when did you grow an inch taller than me? i'm pretty sure before break i could see over your hair lol

It may be partially genetic, but I think a big part of it has to do with nutrition. My parents are both about 5'8" -- I'm 6'0. When I was a child, my grandparents made sure I drank a lot of milk every night before I went to sleep (when they took care of me). My japanese teacher also tells us that in the recent decades, the average height of adults in Japan has increased by several inches due to better foods, which is a big jump!

That's suprising. Same here.

"sagar when did you grow an inch taller than me? i'm pretty sure before break i could see over your hair lol"

you wish mike! I bet I'm taller than you. Remember when we were coming back from chem and we compared? :p

Eh. I go to a school where asians make up almost 80%. And yeah, asians are pretty short. I'm 5'5" myself.

I am a 5'7 white female who is pretty much taller than all the guys at my school. And this is a school where 90% of the people are either asian or polynesian.

Um.

Whoever said Asian-Americans are typically short because of the region they came from...... um....... there are so many different Asian ethnicities and all Asian-Americans couldn't have come from 'one' reigion. that's highly ridiculous.

i go to a high school with an asian population of 25%, and i see tall asians AND short asians.

yes, tall-ness has to do with genetics... but the thing is, in this time and age asians don't limit their diet to 'rice'. they drink milk and play basketball. and height isn't JUST about genetics.

my Asian friend visited her home country during the summer and she said that all the young people are very tall, but the old people are very short.

Nutrition plays a significant role, or else how would have the Dutch famously sprouted from the smallest people in the world to the largest? I think they have a national milk program in that country.

This is only from my personal experience, so take it with a grain of salt: the tallest Asians are Koreans, as I am 5'8" and am one of the shorter ones. Most tend to be around 5'10", but there are plenty of those over 6'. The shortest Asians are Filipinos, with most being under 5'7". The Chinese make up the middle. These are the three predominant Asian ethnicities in my area, and those are my observations. I think it's also important to note that the distribution of wealth amongst Asians goes in that order as well: Koreans, Chinese, and Filipino. At least among the people I know. So maybe that goes to show that nutrition and economics also play vital roles in determining human height.

Asian Americans are not necessarily taller than Asians. However, we do tend to look comparitively older than others our age.

when I first came to China in 9th grade, generally any stranger I spoke to liked to ask me where I went to college. If you see a kid and think they look about 4 or 5... chances are they are closer to 8 (Not kidding)

I'm about 5'10", most of my Asian friends are in the 6'-6'1" range I think. There are 1 or 2 that are about my height... But I'm probably 1 of the shortest ones in our group.

I never said they all came from one region, but I think I remember that much higher concentratiosn came from just a few area's. And if 75% of asian americans came from a location that is traditionally shorter it would create the steriotype of short asians...I'm not saying I'm sure about this, but I think I remember reading something about it in APUSH or something. I may be wrong.

I think the reason that some Asians are short is because they carry heavy books in their backpack too much. For example, if he or she has 7 classes. He or she would carry that 7 heavy books but couple of notebooks in their backpack all day long. >/ Gee talk about back problem. =] And possibility of coffee?

chalk,

The wikipedia stats show nothing. Unless we can see stats of similar groups (i.e. age groups) then the stats are meaningless. "Adults" are going to be an awful indicator of height in Japan and China because of the skewing due to the shortness of older people.

Living in Japan, I've noticed a definite trend in each generation getting taller. The old folks are midgets, the middle-aged look like normal (but slightly short) human beings, and the students are all as tall as, or taller than me (I'm 5'9".) This is even despite the much lower protein intake in the Japanese diet.

IM asian and I am 5'8".

Pretty sure that asian GUYS ARE SHORTER then white guys.

my boyfriend is indian and is 5'7". His dad is, I believe 5'8" or 5'9"

my dad is also indian and is 5'8"

All three born/raised in india

damitssam,

You're one datum in a large field of data. Also, had your diet been different, odds are you'd have been taller or shorter. If Asian guys are so short, why are most of my friends taller than me? I'm 5'9" for the record.

imma 5'6 asian guy
