Are FA packages at Colgate consistent every year?

If my family’s financial situation stays the same, will the financial aid package I receive my freshman year stay the same for the next four years? Is Colgate known to bait and switch or reduce grants in FA packages after freshman year? Any current student or alumni/parent advice would be helpful.

Can I assume you have asked the Financial Aid Department? They know best how to relate to your circumstances, package and concerns on the basis that they are seasoned professionals.

Further to the above, the mere notion of “bait and switch” makes my teeth grind. But then a family’s financial circumstances can indeed change during your 4 years which might, in turn, impact your first year’s package- either up or down. So it’s important for accepted students to get a firm grounding on the conditions relatng to their packages.

Colgate is known for generous financial aid and I have personally never heard of sharp practices.

Good luck with your research!

Hi markham, I followed your advice and emailed the Financial Aid Department with my questions. Colgate responded and they basically said that if my financial situation is similar year to year (i.e. number of family members and number of students in college stay the same) I can expect a really similar financial aid package.

They even said that if tuition rates were to increase my loan and job amount would increase (inevitably) but I will probably receive increases in Grant aid as well!

I can agree with your statement about Colgate’s generosity; they have been really straightforward with my financial aid questions. I will likely be attending Colgate this year. Thanks for the help!

GREAT! Always go to the source. Quality in, quality out (usually expressed as “garbage in, garbage out” but that did not apply here). And thanks for sharing your update!

Congratulations on your acceptance, package and decision. You will enjoy a trasnformative 4 years and benefit immeasurably from the experience.

And after those 4 years you can bang on about Colgate as an alumnus or alumna- as I do.

Go 'gate!
