Are liberal arts colleges perceived as second tier?

You guys crack me up. May I be Tier One, not because I deserve it, but because I have a hook (Super Moderator)?. I can name a forum after myself, if that helps.

One Peet’s coffee (I assume that’s what you mean) is the equivalent of seven Starbucks.

Momwaitingfornew: Supermoderator is like an uber-reach. Well above Tier 1. The kind nobody gets into. Like HYP (I believe nobody got in last year to those three colleges).

Only like HYP? Goodness, I thought it was more like Skull & Bones.

Yeah, Peet’s coffee is what I meant. Never set foot in it. And I probably can count on my fingers the number of Starbucks I’ve drunk. Still, I can think of quite a few Starbucks within a square mile. . . And VP, one of those is just across the high school. Could it be why 11 got into H this year? :)

We can do that??? Clearly I didn’t get the secret decoder ring. :(

Maybe that’s because I’m a Super Super Moderator.

Hey, will the Starbucks/Peet’s debate be as heated as the LAC/Research one? I know someone who will drink nothing but Peet’s. He orders his supply on a monthly basis.

“Clearly I didn’t get the secret decoder ring”

Second tier Super Moderator, I’ll only allow my kid to be censored by Momwaitingfornew, of else he’ll never amount to anything.

Ah, Monydad, but everybody knows that those who were censored by first tier moderators really aren’t all that good – they’re just CC grinds.

I think we need to get EK onto this Peet’s vs. Starbucks debate. She can tell us which is the LAC equivalent and which is the uni-equivalent, and the good and bad point of each, after which she can conclude that it’s all a matter of fit, er… taste.
There are, of course, different kinds of coffee, though perhaps not as many as colleges. There are the pure type (perhaps lacking diversity?;)) there are the blends (very mixed :)). One could go on and debate merits ad infinitum…

And then we need to discuss which brand is sometimes blended by a grad stu . . . er, apprentice.

And which brand meets 100% of need …

I’d include The Dad, Garland, momof wild child, jhs, oh, I’ll add more in morning (mathmom, countingdown, dogo left, bunsenburner) to the first class. After years of reading their posts, I have a connection. I simply love hearing about where their sons/dtrs are employed/attending grad school, etc.

I’m too cheap to buy coffee out. It annoyed me no end that last s/o would buy coffee out 3x a day–and the fancy kinds–and have credit card debt. However, I will drink out when want to sit for an hour and have friendly conversations with strangers. When living in a strange city, the local coffee shop became a hangout during lonely evenings.

It’s obvious that Peet’s is the LAC, and Starbucks is the research university. Everyone in the world has heard of Starbuck’s, but not many outside of the Pacific Northwest and a few elite coffee drinkers have heard of Peet’s.

^^ I really like that analogy. It could be Peet’s but could also be some other LAC (I mean coffee shop) where the barista knows your name and knows that you like your soy latte with an extra shot of espresso and some cinnamon on top. The research uni (I mean Starbucks) just can’t match that kind of individual attention. Sure, the Starbucks cup will give look more impressive when you take it to your meeting but it won’t taste as good.

I’m clearly an elite coffee drinker. In fact so elite, that dh brought me back Tully’s from his last trip to Seattle. :)

See, for me, it’s all about “fit.” If I were just having coffee qua coffee, I might prefer Peet’s. But my poison of choice is a large (refuse to say “venti,” it’s my one-man campaign) caramel machhiato and neither the Peet’s nor the Coffee, Bean, and Tea Leaf quasi-equivalents compares imho.

I buy mine at the local “Stop-N-Rob”. No panache at all but it’s a lot better than anyone would think. Good, honest cup of joe. Most days I remember to bring my cup and lid and they give me refills for free.

I save my money for lunch. ;)

^^ Kinda like a good community college.

LOL! Who knew that all these years we were really talking about coffee?
