Are Perkins loans subsidized?

So no interest until 6 months after college grdauation?

Yes the Perkins loan is subsidized, and it actually has a 9 month grace period - rather than 6.

oh ok, thanks

But don’t count on them for the future, they are supposed to discontinue the program

Also, Perkins loans are not guaranteed loans. The college’s award these and there is limited funding per campus.

Ok thanks  Is it guaranteed that I will not be charged interest while enrolled?

Here are the facts on Perkins Loans: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/types/loans/perkins .

Thanks. The borrower for the loans, should that be me or my mom?

You are the borrower for Perkins - it’s a student loan (rather than a parent loan, like Parent PLUS is).

I am actually investigating this. My D did not have any loan last year but just scholarships and grant money. Due to a couple non-renewable scholarships and the higher upperclassmen tuition rate, she should be eligible to some loan this year. She was offered similar amount of Perkins and direct subsidized loan. We need to decide on getting which one (if any). We don’t need both as the renewable institutional scholarship will replace the work study and half of the loan amount. It is just not clear to me if we can decide which loan (or work study) to keep yet.

@billcsho, your D should sign into her student portal and her aid should be listed. In my D’s school they can accept or decline loans and work study from the online portal. Actually they have been reminded for weeks to do this because bills will be coming out soon and if the loans are not accepted they won’t be included as anticipated aid.
Your D’s school might be different, but have her ask if she’s not sure. If she has never taken out a loan she will have to do loan counseling and sign an MPN I think. Also the switch from FAFSA pin system to FSA ID occured in May so you snd your D might still have to sign up for your IDs, she will need hers for applying for the loans.

This is just my limited knowledge.

I would think the work study would be preferable to loan.

click in undergraduate students, first two items are what need to be done, and upper right corner mentions FSA ID.

Actually I don’t know if the Perkins loan has to be accepted?

@billcsho, last year my daughter was offered Perkins loans but she was obligated to take the full amount of Stafford subsidized/unsubsidized loans offered before she could access the Perkins portion of the offer. (Of course this could vary from college to college.)

I don’t mean to steal the thread. I am just following up on the Perkins loan. I am still waiting for the scholarship to come in to see the final aid numbers. I hope we can choose which loan to remain. Nevertheless, the loans have been accepted automatically. We just need to sign the paper.
