Are preorientation programs important?

I was wondering if participating in a preorientation program was beneficial. I assume that it only help familiarize the students with the city as well as introduce them to other incoming students, but aside from that do they have any other benefits? Furthermore, do the programs cover the cost of flight to and from DC? I know the programs themselves are free along with housing and food but I am unsure about flight.

It depends on the program. Getting to know the campus and other incoming students is a benefit they all share, but some of them are specifically geared towards different interests. If you’re planning on pursuing social justice, participating in a program to do community work will certainly boost your experience and add to your resume. This is the same with all the others, whether they be healthcare or politics-focused. I’m pretty sure none of the programs cover travel fees. PEP might, since it’s run by the GSP office that helps with low-income families. As for program fees, I know the GUPOP ones aren’t free since you’re hiking in national parks, but I don’t think the others have a program fee.
