Are research mentors important when submitting a work for review by colleges?

Hi,

I am an independent high school researcher who placed well in local science fairs and qualified for Regneron ISEF this year. I noticed on the MIT supplemental research application that it asked for a letter of recommendation. However, since I completed the entirety of my research on my own, I was wondering what I should do. Would you recommend leaving the research supplement out entirely or submit it without the reference from a mentor? Would a reference from a mentor be received more favorably than a project that was done entirely independently.

Thank you so much in advance!

Contact MIT Admissions to be sure: that’s why they’re there!

Hope that helps!
