Are the first couple of semesters at Umass all general studies?

I made another post yesterday about the possibility of switching majors since i got rejected from CS and placed into my second choice, Economics.

It was made clear that I can not switch until I am actually going to Umass after the first semester. (correct me if i’m wrong)
So what I want to do is try to switch after my first semester there, and if i’m rejected, then i’d apply after the second semester again. (If it’s possible, once again let me know if it is).

Now my real question is, is the first year at Umass Amherst mostly or entirely general classes that everyone has to take? I wouldn’t want to be behind if I was able to switch to computer science.

I appreciate it a lot guys, Thanks for the help in advance!

Anyone know? It would really help. :frowning:

UMass has a fairly limited number of general education (gen ed) requirements and there are many classes that can fulfill them. Most students spread the gen ed classes over a couple of semesters. Most students start immediately with a mix of gen ed and some intro or pre-reqs for their major. Some majors have fairly specific class sequences so getting the correct pre-reqs done early helps with graduating on time. You would probably want to sign up for the intro Java programing class and calculus plus a gen ed or two in your first semester. The advisors will help with this during summer NSO.

I would recommend taking any intro econ classes you need, as well as CS121, the intro to java class. You will also need to take Math131. With CS121 and M131 you will be on track with the rest of the CS majors for first semester.
