what made you decide to attend Rice over those ivies that have also accepted you?

Rice is in Houston

Yeah, a lot of people at Rice chose Rice over Cornell, Brown, etc. I’m not one of them, though, so I can’t offer specific reasons without speculating!

Tons of threads on this if you do a search.

I turned down Cornell, Columbia, UPenn, and MIT for the following reasons:
- $$$$$$$, duh. This was far and away the most important factor.
- I’m from Texas, so I could bring/keep my car if I went to Rice, but not any of the above
- Warm weather. It’s a big deal.
- Rice’s rankings for my particular department are superb - I think 7th nationally. I did a ****ton of research on the professors and classes related to what I wanted to do, and what Rice provides most closely matches what I was looking for (bioe at MIT looks like glorified biochemistry, columbia focused too much on medical applications). I haven’t been disappointed.
- I’m double-majoring in a field completely unrelated to my “real” major, and this would be more difficult/impossible at some of the more technically focused schools I was accepted to.
- MIT accepted a bunch of dumb rich URM kids from my area, while waitlisting me and my ex (broke white kids) - these were kids I knew cheated on extracurricular stuff, whose parents made donations, blah blah blah. I knew I was more qualified and seriously questioned the judgment of the university, to the point where I turned them down when they accepted me in May. Good reason? Maybe not, but I don’t regret it.
- Beeeeeerrrr Biiiiiiike!

beeeeeeeer bike

From my friends who turned down some Ivies for Rice, many of them said they did so because of the quality of life, the weather, and the residential college system.

silentsailor what were your stats? If you apply Rice ed do you still have a chance for merit aid? Looking at engineering.

Well, I was accepted into both MIT and Rice, and am now wondering about where to go. :

seltor: I’d imagine that a key component of that decision would be cost at Rice vs. MIT. If you got into MIT, I’d think you would get some scholarship at Rice?

Compare the quality of life at both universities… although both universities tend to be nerdy ( ), the quality of life is quite different at both schools. Rice is very well known for its laid-back, fun atmosphere. Visit both again and see what atmosphere you prefer.

I’ve visited Rice 3 times before (and LOVED it.) Never been to MIT. I’ll visit MIT before I make a decision…

And as for the $, I still haven’t received financial aid packages from either.

selter01, how did you get in both already? If ED then you were required to withdraw from the other. If RD then decisions are not out yet.

Vision weekend and likely letter. I guess I should wait and find out officially… but I am already worrying. Sorry if I cased any confusion.

PS. MIT decisions were released yesterday.

selter, are you saying you received a “likely letter” from Rice recently? Was this separate from the Vision weekend process?

<<<well, i=“” was=“” accepted=“” into=“” both=“” mit=“” and=“” rice,=“” am=“” now=“” wondering=“” about=“” where=“” to=“” go.=“” :=“”>>></well,>

Rice is way more socially balanced (socially healthy) and much (!) better in the humanities than MIT, plus Rice’s having excellent sciences, as well.

It’s totally understandable why a Berkeley undergraduate alum and Tufts parent would take cheapshots against MIT. Talk about lacking “good self-esteem” (which, by the way, is a redundancy since self-esteem is by definition good).

I haven’t turned down any Ivies for Rice yet, but I am considering it along with some Ivies and Nescac schools.

My college decision ended up coming down to Rice v. Princeton; I ended up choosing Rice in the end. I visited both schools and they both obviously had great programs, great professors, smart students, and amazing resources. I could have gone either way on the climate and location (though I wanted to get out of the the South, so Princeton actually got points for that). I know that I had a limited sample size and I’m making gross generalizations, but the students that I talked to at Rice just seemed so much more interested in what they were studying. The Princeton students all seemed very involved in their studies, but I didn’t get the same excitement that I saw from most of the Rice students that I talked to. The Princeton students seemed like they were carrying out their studies because they felt obligated to, the Rice students because they loved it.

One of my friends here passed up Stanford and Yale for Rice. A full ride plus research is as good a reason as any.

Also, we have Beeeeeeeeer Biiiike

I’m evidently missing something because I have no idea what you are talking about here or where this is coming from.

Edit:

Your post history illustrates that you have often displayed a highly hostile attitude in this forum. Perhaps hoping for a rational explanation from you is too much. Please prove me wrong.
