<p>I agree. I cant imagine people leaving after one semester because they can’t hack it or university wanted them to leave when they clearly state that the first semester pass or no credit is to ensure that the students don’t feel the stress adjusting to the pace of MIT. </p>
<p>On a different note, does MIT have an age restriction where they advise students not to show up if they are not 17 and skip an year or something like that?</p>
No. There are a lot of younger students at MIT, and it’s not unusual at all to meet someone who skipped a year earlier in his/her education – most of the time you wouldn’t even know that unless you happened to know the person’s birthday or something. There are also younger students admitted each year who come to MIT without finishing high school.</p>
<p>I knew of a few MIT students who had serious difficulties with abstraction and would likely never be a good fit for the academic work. One appears to have cheated his way through (being in a fraternity can be a help with such things). The others dropped out and probably never went back. </p>
<p>There are very rare cases of CAP kicking out a student with no previous Warning. A first-term freshman who fails everything and whose midterm evaluations claim minimal skill at problem-solving might very well be asked to leave. </p>
