Are there useless majors?

Overall, I’m glad I got my Liberal Arts degree. It cleared many gen ed requirements out of the way and at least I got an Associate’s degree under my belt.

I think college is the most useful for connections with professors and fellow students. I think liberal arts type degrees are easier because they want the student to explore society more. If you don’t take advantage of the real life applications the major offers, it is useless. What’s the point of sitting around and reading books other than that?

Books are a window to humanity. Stories are influential.

However, I still think it is important to learn some business and economics for financial security. Taking a few computer classes and keeping your knowledge on technology fresh is also necessary as technical skills are in great demand.

I’d I sound like a crackpot, it’s 'cause I’m tired and a little tipsy lol.

It’s not the degree, it’s knowing how to market it and building specific skills that no one else has or can do as well as you do. We forget that many people go into careers totally unrelated to their degree. I have an uncle who got a degree in Psychology and now he does body work for Indy race cars. My friend’s dad has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and he runs a farm. Life is weird like that.

Hospitality

A lot of majors are useless by themselves but when they’re paired with something maybe more practical they can give a person a big edge. I’m a supporter of liberal arts but I think that you should have at least a vague sense of what you will be doing after college.

English

Art History

Ethnomusicology

Music History

Theater

Film and TV

Dance

etc.

History isn’t far off, but I guess its somewhat useful if you’re some kind of lawyer or diplomat.

Haha, someone is clearly a STEM fool.

“Hospitality”

Hospitality majors aren’t useless. If you’ve ever stayed at a 5 star hotel or at a luxurious ski resort, you’ve reaped the benefits of someone who majored in Hospitality.

It depends on what you do with your major. A lot of people have jobs that are not related to their majors anyway. However, it is true that some majors offer less chances for earning a high-paying job in the future.

“Film and TV”

Im no expert on the others listed so I cant really comment, but I do know that a degree in film and TV isnt useless if you major in something more technical in film school.

Like the majority of STEM majors?

Wow, that sounds cool about learning scottish furniture in art history. I say, any major is good. You can go anywhere you want to. Just learn the basics, communication. If you can’t communicate, you will have problems. Also, common sense is needed too.

“Like the majority of STEM majors?”

I think it’s more the engineering and finance/economics/accounting (business) majors than STEM. The job oppurtunities for a biology/chemistry/physics major are worse than even an art or design major (in terms of jobs related to the field of study).

“someone is clearly a STEM fool”

Sure, I’m a STEM fool too, and I’m going to laugh all the way to the bank. :D

Useless majors = anything with the word “Studies” at the end.

“The job oppurtunities for a biology/chemistry/physics major are worse than even an art or design major (in terms of jobs related to the field of study).”

Really? Can you link up some stats/articles that confirm this?

Can’t believe you guys forgot about one of the worst of them:

Philosophy.

Hands down one of the worst majors to graduate with.

I want to do a philosophy major
will I make any money? No
will I earn enough to sustain a familiy? No
will I study what I love? yes
is it wortth it? YES!
Do what you love and the money will come.
if all you care is about the money then go into the black market.

Philosophy majors have one of the highest acceptance rates into graduate school, its just wonderful I still cannot understand why they do not teach philosophy to everyone, maybe there would be less pricks and ignorant people going around selling bibles and annoying people in their front doors.
No major is useless or worthless, its all depends why you are going to the university, if you are going to get a little paper so you do not earn minimum wage then I guess philosophy is worthless, but if you are going to collage to expand , and develop your mind philosophy is the one.

Jehovah witness dam you! let me eat my breakfast!

Sounds like a pretty ignorant statement. Oh the irony!

Sounds just like a Philosophy major to look down on others that go to college for, oh Idk, a career.
