We will be touring BC with my DS19 later this month. On other college tours we always try to have dinner/hang out in the adjacent off-campus vicinity to try to get a feel for what is off campus and close by and where students might hang out.
Does anyone have any restaurant suggestions for the area near BC? Where do BC students hang out off campus? Is there a place where BC kids go to watch the BC hockey/football/basketball games (when they aren’t at the games)?
Thanks in advance -
Matt Murphy pub in Brookline was named Best Fish n Chips in Boston area. It’s a small Irish pub with imported ale and great food. Usually no line if you go early.
If you want homemade ice cream, you have to go to White Mountain, right across the street from campus.
Matt Murphy’s is very good, but it is in Brookline Village, a few miles from campus. There are several good eating spots in Brookline Village, but they are not places where BC students generally hang out. There are a couple of places closer to Cleveland Circle where BC students go. The campus itself is in a suburban , residential area. There really aren’t any restaurants directly adjacent to the campus.
Cleveland Circle is one of the major hangouts for pizza, burgers and sports watching, as many students live in the 'hood, but not the prettiest. Eagles Deli featured on espn for their 5 lb hamburger. (Not recommending it per se, just pointing it out as an example.)
If you want to venture further into town, Coolidge Corner has plenty of places to walk around and visit.
Across the street from campus: White Mountain Creamery is a must (pro tip: seasonal peach is wonderful), and El Pelon Taqueria, which is fast food style.
In Newton Centre, we’re big fans of Bill’s Pizza, which is a favorite with the local community. Also, Tartufo, which is Italian.
Just avoid the Chipotle in Cleveland Circle.
agree that Eagles Deli is worth a visit. Chronicle named it best deli in Boston. They make a signature sandwich with corned beef. Very good option, and yes it is closer than Matt Murphy’s, but Murphy’s is unique and the fish n chips which comes wrapped in newspaper is yummy and authentic. The Old Speckled Hen ale is also worth the trip (for adults of drinking age).
@preppedparent @TomSrOfBoston @bluebayou I am looking in to Boston College, and I noticed that they had a ten year plan of renovating/new buildings. How far along in that are they?
Personally, I think BC is doing a great job on the capital front, particularly given the geo-political issues. The lower part of BC is actually in the City of Boston, so they have to (cough cough) obtain City approval for doing practically anything. As an example, it took several years for BC to obtain a permit to house grad students in an off campus apartment building that BC already owned.
That being said, BC is doing things right. Stokes Hall is awesome. Gasson is beautiful. New rec center and sports fields. New museum home.
Much to enjoy.

@bluebayou Do you know anything about plans for the new university center? When will it open? Also, do you know anything about the dorms? It is hard to find info on BC’s website.
All Frosh rooms are standard doubles. Singles are rare. Some forced triples occur depending on yield.
Aprox. 40% of Frosh live on Newton Campus. The rest live on Upper Campus (main BC campus). There are hundreds of threads on cc extolling the virtues of each.

@bluebayou Is there any way you could give me your input on my chances of getting in?
sorry, I’m not very good at chances. Plus, all I would do is compare your numbers against BC’s medians, which I assume that you can do yourself. But the numbers only make you competitive, like every other applicant who is above the medians.
But I will make a suggestion: search the BC thread for posts by scottj, who has excellent suggestions on how to present yourself in your app. (Hint: BC knows is a great school, so focus on what you bring to the table other than GPA+test scores.)
Good luck.
