Do you know if there are areas to avoid around Princeton?
I'm looking for a studio, I'm not picky, but I would rather not be mugged...

… I’m so confused.

Avoid the campus if you can: there are a bunch of no-good ruffians around that part.

There’s this one section of Prospect Avenue that’s a little sketchy.

^^Cute.
They jest. Princeton is very safe, all over town. Just be smart walking late at night on poorly lit streets.

In Princeton, you are a lot more likely to be victimized by an unscrupulous hedge-fund manager than mugged.

I meant the surrounding areas, I am looking to rent an apartment off-campus :)

You would have to work to find anything sketchy within walking/biking distance of campus (unless you were looking at biking meaningful distances). You would probably have to do something yourself to wreck the neighborhood if you wanted to live in a bad neighborhood. If you are talking about “Greater Princeton” (what real-estate agents would call the Princeton area, or places where people stick the Princeton name on their developments) – that can go all the way to Trenton to the south and New Brunswick to the north; east to Freehold and west to the Delaware – there, maybe you can find something sketchy if you try. (But I don’t know where, exactly; I’ve never seen the sketchy places, except if you are looking at anything in Trenton or someplace with “Brunswick” in the name, you may want to be picky about it.)

I went to a summer camp as a high schooler at Princeton and they let us roam around at night without adults (the “adults” being 20 year old college students RAing). Of course, we weren’t allowed to go too far away, but no one got mugged.

Perhaps the OP should stay home in his/her gated community.

Avoid Tilghman’s office, I’m never going near that place again…

Tomofboston: I feel this was a very inappropriate comment :(

I come from a dangerous suburb in France where no girl is left on her own outside at any time of the day, let alone night. Violence is omnipresent and I was sent to hospital with severe head injury because I was attacked during a class at high school. My music teacher was raped in the toilets of the school and blamed for wearing a skirt. My brother was mugged half a dozen times. Two years ago the police was replaced by the military and a curfew was put in place for the summer. Firemen do not come any more because the teenagers used to set traps by setting the basement of buildings on fire and then waiting at several dozens for the emergency truck to arrive, until the day a fireman got beheaded.

I have never been to Princeton. I know of course that not everywhere is like Vitry, but I am not sure whether the fear will ever go away.

And even without such circumstances, pardon me for having the audacity to even assume that some area of New Jersey could be dangerous.

Or maybe you are just ■■■■■■■■, in which case I own a horse.

^^^Then you should have explained your situation in the beginning, though not in such detail. Your initial post still sounds like a naive rich kid who is afraid that they might see a poor person if they venture off campus.

No, you should not have jumped to conclusions. The question is valid and not phrased badly in the OP (the second line was meant humorously, not prissily.)

Actually tomofboston, the OP’s original post sounded nothing like that. You sir, fail.

You DESERVE to go to Princeton :)

After reading this post, Princeton gets my vote!

Hey Im not a Princeton Student (yet wishes) But Ive heard it is a safe area, Ive been to NJ but up north, there are some dangerous areas in NJ like Camden and even Newark, but they arent close to Princeton.
Trenton might be “dangerous” (in quotes because their criminal rate is very low, specially compared to Camden, I think Youll be ok. I come from a very violent place as well, and to be honest even Camden was nothing compared, but def Trenton and Princeton are a safe place!! :)

Trust me, it’s safe. I’m in HS and live down the block. I understand your difficulties at home and you’ll be completely safe. As others above have stated, it would be difficult to find sketchy activity in this town.

Good luck!

watch out for all of those white collar criminals!
