Thanks for the empathy @SomaRathore We had issues with the Common App to begin with so the teacher submitted via snail mail. MICA has no record of it. They did say we can use email for the resubmit. I’m sure things will work out in the end.
Our kids’ HS uses Naviance for the teacher recommends as well. When my son logged on to Naviance for the first time this school year he got a big message across the top of the screen telling him to link to his CA account. IIRC you need the CAID # in order to make the link work so you have to set up your CA account first. I know that this message didn’t exist earlier in August when he was making his list of colleges, and it looked like they hadn’t yet updated to the current version of Naviance at that time. By the evening of the Senior College Planning Night (first week of school in late August) he could link. You also need to decide at that time whether to retain or waive your FERPA right to review your teacher and counselor letters and that decision can’t be undone. Once you specify that choice, you can link the two accounts. If your linking was successful then you get the following permanent message on your screen:
“Your Common App account has been matched.
Your FERPA status is [waived or not]. You’re ready to apply to colleges using Common App.”
If your students have no recollection of any of that, it’s possible that the school didn’t refresh from the prior year. If they did all that, and the link got lost - well, I suppose anything is possible, but wow. Major fail, Common Ap!
It’s great to be able to keep track of the teacher rec. and counselor report on your CA account. Naviance will let you know that it’s been sent but the Common Ap. will also let you know when it was submitted AND when the college actually downloads it.
@JBStillFlying I know what you are saying! It took D quite a while to be able to connect the two. Even after that we had issues, becoz while in Naviance it showed that the the recom were submitted CA still didnt have it. When I contacted CA they put the blame on Naviance. We still do not know who was responsible but the teachers tried multiple times to resubmit and finally they went through. The teachers who submitted later had no issues. But we had billing issues with CA. One college D applied to showed up as being paid to another school in the credit card statement via CA!
@SomaRathore - Unbelievable. My son’s had his share of issues too - ended up with another applicant’s information in his portal for several schools! All due to CA. Seems like a few wires are getting crossed once everyone hits “submit”.
Does anyone have any input on Colorado BFA programs? My kid is looking at the east coast schools but today said she might be interested in UC Boulder. Their deadline is in 9 days, yikes.
And just as an update, kid has applied to, and gotten accepted by, MICA, SAIC, UIC and Columbia College Chicago Very exciting, and there have been financial aid offers, but we’re hoping it will increase (Hope springs eternal, of course!)
@missis the only art school I researched that was decent in Colorado is Rocky Mountain college of art and design. The financial aid for out of state kids for public universities there made me not even consider uc boulder. It’s been about a year since I researched them as an option, but nothing really stood out about their program that would make me choose them over an in state public.
@missis congrats on the acceptances!!!
Congrats on all the acceptances! It’s so exciting to see! My girl was only home from SVA for 10 days, since she is an RA, but it was great! She is really working hard on applying for internships for the summer. She’s pretty sure she won’t get one, because she’s only a sophomore, but her animation professor encouraged her to apply. She said it’s good experience for next year, no matter what. She is still loving SVA and welcomes anyone who would like to ask her questions! PM me if you want her info! Love seeing my peeps from the last 3 years giving feedback! @JBStillFlying and @NYart15 you guys ROCK!
Just a quick update for anyone interested in California College of the Arts (CCA): my daughter reached out to ask about their Diversity Scholarships, and apparently they have NOT been awarded yet.
Hey all! Happy holidays and congrats on the acceptances!
I posted a bunch last school year/a bit earlier this school year, but I’m a freshman illustration student at Ringling! I also was accepted to a bunch of schools like MICA, SVA, RIT, Otis, etc. I just wanted to update you guys on what the art school experience was like, because this time last year I was losing my mind over the college admissions process! (if you don’t believe me, just look at last year’s art admissions thread. oof.)
The first semester of Ringling was overall, fantastic! I took the five classes required for most freshmen (15 credit hours in total), and while some were pretty challenging, I feel like I’ve improved so much as an artist and a writer! (I took three studio art classes and two liberal arts classes, I will be doing the same next semester). There’s already been so many galleries, visiting speakers, company presentations and workshops, and so much more. As a freshman, I’ve visited career services twice and they’ve been nothing but helpful. Thanks to them I have a website for my art in the works and business cards designed!
The social aspect is great too. It was super easy to make friends with some really great people. While most art schools are small, it’s typically a very opening and welcoming environment. Clubs help a bit too! I’m in improv, student government, residential student association and comic book club!
I’m always busy, but that’s because I choose to be! Ringling does give a lot of homework, but I do like that and I love having a bunch of extracurriculars. It just keeps me and my mind active. And when I’m not doing that, I’m usually hanging out with friends or having some down time Overall, I’m super happy here.
If anyone has any questions about Ringling or the art admissions process, let me know!
@pastelrain congrats!!
I’m so happy to hear you’re having a great year.
@pastelrain So glad to hear things are going well at Ringling! I have thought about you and others who went through the admissions process last year - wondering how everyone fared. My DS is at VCU Arts and enjoys it very much. It was a great fit for him, between an excellent art program and a traditional college experience (sporting events, etc). I feel he has the best of both worlds.
Yes, @pastelrain, really glad things are going so well for you at Ringling! Hope Parsons is as good a fit for my D19.
@pastelrain so good to hear from you and that things are going so well. Really impressed with all the clubs you’re involved with already as a freshman.
S just got accepted to Ringling yesterday (the packaging on the box they sent was so cool!). Thanks so much for sharing your info and experiences so far.
hey sbgal- just thought of you and was wondering how things are working out at VCUARTS? hope all is well. Our D just continues to enjoy and get the most out of her time there . Only three semesters left. It goes by fast.
@missis I would love to know about UC Boulder as well. My daughter is a potential ceramics major (HS junior now) applying to nearly identical list to your daughter.
@stones3 strangely enough my daughter never ever heard back from VCU . She did apply before Nov 15 before the scholarship deadline. Not a word after application confirmation.
@pastelrain So glad to hear your update. I have been following posts from last year educating myself with this whole process. D not apply to Ringling but all the posts here have been so very helpful. Really wonderful to see you settled and loving it.
@pastelrain so good to hear from you!!! I know it will be helpful for this year’s students to hear from those who have gone before!
@SomaRathore Do you mean your daughter applied to VCU this past November (2018)? If that’s the case, no worries. When my DS applied, it was November (2017) and he didn’t get a response until the first week of March. He was accepted and just finished his first semester there!
