I plan on majoring in creative writing no matter what college I go to, though I am not sure what specific field I want to go into (I'm caught between being a freelance novel writer and a writer for magazines, etc). I'm wondering if there's a better choice between the two or if it's simply personal preference.

A suggestion: go to a 4yr college and major in something other than creative writing. Minor in CW. Keep writing. Find a job and work for a couple years. Keep writing. Try to get into an MFA in writing program if you feel you must. Keep writing. Keep your job. Keep writing.

Many writers will never be heard from outside of the classroom. All writers will, however, need to work, and the more options you have in this regard the better. Writers didn’t until very recently (like two hundred years ago) make a decent living writing. Most of the writers then and today still did/do not make a living by writing. If you can, great; if you can’t, you’ll still need to eat. Major in something with which you have a much better chance of eating. Developing into a good writer can be the cherry on the top of your life.
