Art School

How's Wash U's school of art?

I'm very interested in doing the art school's pre college program this summer and I was wondering whether
a)the program is really strong and rigourous and I would learn a lot and
b) if they give a fair amount of freedom and its fun outside of the coursework
c) how does it compare to schools like saic risd smfa etc

I'm not in the school of art, and really know little about the strength of the program, etc., except that I've heard the painting program is one of the best in the nation. I have many friends in the art school and they all love it....there's a strong sense of community there. Also, the sculpture majors I know are particularly happy with that program.

As far as it compares to RISD, etc... even with my limited knowledge I am sure RISD is (substantially) better (again, maybe with the exception of the painting program... but, really, when it somes to art schools, can you get much better than RISD?)

whatever you do, don't go to otis' summer of art. it was mediocre. if i were you, i'd go to risd. it's only the best art school in the country, and i feel incredibly bad about turning it down to go to washu after they accepted me and offered me fabulous financial aid. i wanted to go there SO BAD for the pre-college summer program, but my mom wanted me to get a job, so i had to stay home and go to otis. it was fun, but i felt i would have had a better experience at risd.
i love risd. i'm probably going to apply there for grad school, if i still want to be an artist in four years (i doubt i'll change my mind though.)
