Arts and music for non-Majors, NP and Purchase

For someone who most likely won't major in art or music, is it possible to still take art courses or continue with violin lessons at either New Paltz or Purchase? While Purchase does list conservatory classes for non-conservatory students, I was wondering about the ability to still play an instrument. At New Paltz, the course listings for even basic art classes seem restricted to students in the School of Fine & Performing Arts. Here is from the description for Basic Photography:

"Must be enrolled in one of the following majors: Ceramics, Graphic Design, Metal, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Undeclared:Pre-Art Education, Visual Arts, Visual Arts Education"

She will most likely be majoring in the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Thanks for anyone who has attended who can answer.

I’m not really sure about this…your best bet is to call the school and ask. My son is an art student at New Paltz and he is able to take courses outside the art school without a problem.

LilyMoon,
Thanks for the reply. I’ll definitely do that. How does he enjoy school?

He is really enjoying it at New Paltz. His classes are small and he really gets to know his professors and the other students. The student body is down to earth, diverse and creative and he has made some nice friends. The town is fun to visit as we just went to visit last weekend and had an awesome time. Lots of restaurants to try and cute shops to wander through and then we went to Minnewaska State Park which is just beautiful. If you love the outdoors, there is so much to do there. The Poughkeepsie shopping malls are a short drive away. It’s a great place to go to school. I’d be happy to answer any other questions.
