I was filling out my application and came across the Undergraduate Program: Arts and Engineering.

From what I understand one is able to basically get two degrees in 5 years. I was originally interested in Biomedical engineering but after coming across this program I'd be interested in that along with computer science.

I was just wondering if someone could tell me a little more about this program. If I'm understanding it correctly? And if my two majors are possible? (I'd imagine alot of the classes would overlap btw engineering and cs) Is this program harder to get into rather than just applying directly to the engineering school? And is the financial aid any different considering you'll be attending another year?

Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks

Hey BroadwayBlue,

Although I’m not in Arts & Engineering, I can try to answer some of your questions.

Yes, you’re understanding the program correctly. A double major in 5 years. I’m not sure if Lehigh has a biomedical engineering program; I’ve never heard of one. If you’re going for something medically related, we do have bioengineering. If you plan to combine computer science and any other engineering field, some of your classes might overlap. In terms of aid, you renew every year anyway, so nothing should be different, you’re just going to school for another year.

Best,

Thanks for your help. Do you think the eng+cs majors would kill me or do you think its possible?

Also I thought Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering were the same thing? My penn state app insinuated that the two were the same.
And after googling it just now their seems to be mixed opinions.

BroadwayBlue,

I think you can definitely do this combination if you’re driven enough. PSU might have different types of engineering programs, but Lehigh only has BioE, which is not the same as biomedical.

Good luck,

Alright thanks.
Can you tell me the difference between the two?
Because on Penn States website they make the two out to be the samething. I remember on the application category where you had to choose a major, bioengineering was on the list, but they made sure to say its also known as biomedical engineering.

Oh and also according to collegeboard Lehigh does have a program in BME?

From VS Pages:

"Bioengineering is a broader field of study and biomedical engineering is one branch of that field.
Students in both programs study life sciences that have human aspects, but physiology is not part of the courses in bioengineering.
Bioengineering focuses on treatment, research, diagnosis, modeling and hybridization processes. Biomedical engineering focuses on the diagnostic, imaging, dialysis and preventative medicine.
Bioengineering is concerned with improving the quality of life, whereas biomedical engineering is a career in which you assist medical professionals. "

I am in the IDEAS program.
Ive never heard of a “computer science” program at lehigh. (maybe im wrong)
We do have cse (computer science and engineering) in the engineering school.
But then if you did say bioengineering + cse you would only be in the engineering school.

Yes, IDEAS is a little harder to get in than just engineering even though it is not an honors program. I dont understand this because it also has an GPA requirement like IBE ( business + enigneering). The great thing about IDEAS is the that u can pretty much make you own cirriculum. Like im doing Mech Eng and PreLaw, i pretty much get to pick whta courses i take as long as it gets approved.

It is also an option to get into IDEAS after you get into lehigh, but subject to approval.

Bill Best is in charge of IDEAS and he’s a nice guy and takes care of his students.

If you do cse+bioengineering you could probably double major in five years but nothing to with ideas. Itll also be tough…i know someone who is doing applied physics and electrical engineering in 4 years and he is extremely dedicated and has quite a bit of AP.
