Artsy/ Activist culture at Haverford?

My D is accepted at Haverford and we are very happy. The strong academics, the honor code, the location and the warm community are a great match. We just have one doubt: our D is a visual artist, plays guitar in two rock bands, is an acitivist in womens issues, and is a true individualist. She’s an individualist, something of a hipster - her clothing ranges from basic to vintage to hippy. She doesn’t want a campus that’s super counter-culture - in fact she didn’t like Oberlin bc she thought it was too “alt” - but she does want to make sure there’s enough range in the student culture and enough artsy/ activist kids like her that she won’t feel isolated. In her current prep school she’s one of about 3 students like this, and she doesn’t want a repeat of this experience. So, my question is: How much of an artsy/ activist culture is there at Haverford?

She’s definitely find her people, the type you are describing. Despite the small student body, there are a range of students and people like your daughter.

I would agree with Doschicos.

Regarding music / bands, there is an ongoing Tri-co “battle of the bands” that happens every semester (I think). There were 8 or 10 bands from Swarthmore, Haverford and Bryn Mawr at BM over this past weekend. I’m told the music is actually pretty good…and students from all 3 schools+ attend.

Swarthmore story of an older BOB event…

If she can’t find “her people” at Haverford, she can always check out Bryn Mawr - there may be more like her there.

FUCS provides a lot of live music on campus, pretty much every weekend. Students from Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Swarthmore are known to attend.

Another benefit is the location. There is a good music scene in Philly and plenty of venues of different sizes.

My son will be a freshman this fall, and he plans to bring his guitar and amp to Haverford with him. He plays almost every day.

megan12, why do you say that? Is Brym Mawr more artsy? I hear there are tons of athletes at Haverford. Is this an issue? Do they dominate the culture?

I only say that because of the way you described your daughter as a “hipster”, artsy, women’s right activist, and that seems to fit a Bryn Mawr vibe a little more than Haverford maybe. I wouldn’t say that athletics dominate Haverford by any means, although they certainly do have their share of “Haverbros” there. But I’m sure they have their artsy side too. My son was a complete nerd (and proud of it), and he loved Haverford so there’s something for everyone.

Haverford has the studio arts program for the BiCo and it seems artsy enough. I think she’d find her peeps. Bryn Mawr has the swimming pool that Haverford athletes use. They share peeps and resources.

And what about acitivism at Haverford?

For a school its size, Haverford has a relatively large number of clubs and organizations, including ones focused on affinity and activism; see https://www.haverford.edu/student-engagement/clubs-organizations . Starting new clubs is also relatively easy. Haverford’s various social media accounts have posts discussing a large number, and variety, of student engagement activities; you can get a flavor of the college’s community spirit by going through these posts. Haverford students tend to be civil and respectful of others’ views, and take the social aspect of the Honor Code very seriously. The Quaker tradition stresses conciliation, resulting in typically less in-your-face confrontations than at schools where views differing from those of the majority are not always warmly, or even civilly, received. Best wishes to you and your D as she makes her final decision!

Okay - Just back from the overnight at Haverford, and am completely reassured. For one thing, I’d say the kids tend toward the quirky intellectual type. I saw lots of adorably scruffy and offbeat kids, and generally students seem grounded, accepting, engaged, and out to make the world a better place. There is an Art and Music building covered with murals and filled with art supplies that students can use whenever they like; the day we saw it a student band was rehearsing. The band scene is big on campus and among the colleges, and there are rehearsal and performance spaces on campus as well as open mikes in town and Philly. There is a big new Visual Arts, Culture and Media Center opening in fall 2017. The Quaker empasis on social justice is very visible, with several exciting programs that study this and fund nonprofit student work around the world. Our D liked almost everyone she met, and felt very at home. I think Haverford will be her choice.
