@buuzn03 We are an arty family (in the sense that many of us have made careers in the arts). Just like any other field you will find that there are various programs. For theater, there is the standard school play which any school will do. Kids in our area who are serious do summer programs or school programs. Some schools attend regional or state theater finals where they perform one act plays and other theatrical events. Some boarding schools will also be going to these programs some will not. For kids who love theater you want to make sure that there are multiple types of performances. For example, do they do one school play or do they also combine theater with the music department or even dance. The more combinations there are, the more likely it is the arts are lively there. Some BS also have performances which attract a local audience. This could be a sign the level is higher than a school play.
If her interest develops, you want to make sure she has enough there to develop her interests. For one of my nephews, theater and music were his only EC’s. He ended up in a tiny highly selective college program based on these interests. So, he did all of the programs up to and including state level tournaments. He was very serious about it and is now working in that field.
I was really impressed at some schools by the arts and some not at all. But then again, I think the arts are very important. Take a look at the course catalog, more classes in arts means there is both interest and staff to support it.
There are Summer visual arts & graphic design programs for middle School & high school students @ Stanford. We know kids that loved the program…For boarding schools, so many of the girls schools have strong arts programs. Also, just saw info sent from Putney. We visited Kent and were impressed by the famous alumni who are in the performing arts.
