Which top schools would be considered "arty"?

Bard and Sarah Lawrence are reputed to be very arty. Of the schools I've visited, Vassar comes to mind, and I'm sure an arty student would find a niche at Oberlin or Wesleyan as well.

Bennington is very strong in many of the arts. It is worth a visit there for the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) center alone. It is open 24 hours, has a movie theater, studios, performance spaces, an art gallery, a digital art lab (the pod) and supposedly the largest "sprung" dance floor in North America, among many other things. It is a haven for artists.

Skidmore, Connecticut College, the ones previously listed

I'd add Hampshire and Brandeis to the list.

Colleges that come to my mind when one says "artsy": Vassar College, Hampshire College, Emerson College, Reed College, Wesleyan University, Oberlin College, Bard College, Brandeis University, Sarah Lawrence College, Hamilton College.

Don't overlook Williams -- the best art history and art studio department among the most academically rigorous LACs. There are three world class museums on or near campus and alumni of the art history department have gone on to top jobs at all the major museums in the country. The art studio facilities are beautiful and well funded and the instructors are successful artists themselves. There are plenty of opportunities for students to display their work and exhibits are well supported by the college.

Art and THE arts -- including theater, dance, music, writing -- are a huge focus of the college, even for non-majors, and there's a lot of money available for internships, grants, travel and other art related activities.

My list for other arts focused LACs would include Wesleyan, Hamilton, Vassar, Oberlin, Kenyon, Skidmore, Conn College and Smith.

Virginia Commonwealth.

What is "arty"?

great suggestions. mostly on the east coast?

SUNY Purchase.

Muhlenberg - great theatre, vocal music and dance departments

For one on the west coast, you could say Whitman. It has an incredibly strong theatre department.
