As a freshman...

I honestly know very little about how colleges arrange class scheduling, etc.

If you had to guess, what would you say is about the maximum hours spent in class per week that the average college would allow?

The maximum credit hours a student can take is usually around 20. Taking 30 hours is about 7-10 classes. No one takes that many classes in one semester. Many people have a bit of difficulty with the 15-17 hours they already have.

I just registered for my classes at Mizzou. I am taking 15 hours my first semester, which is average. It keeps me on track toward graduating in four years but it won't overload me my first semester at college. You also have to consider if you are bringing in credits from AP classes. Even if you only took a couple AP tests, if the credits transfer, it makes a difference in how many hours you have to take to be on track for graduation.

What's interesting is that I have always heard that almost all classes are 3 or 4 hours, but I am taking a couple 1 hour classes and two 5 hour classes. I am only taking one class that is 3 hours.

I have a question for those in college about studying: From what I have read on here, and heard from friends and advisors, a lot of the studying outside of class people talk about is reading your textbook or supplemetary articles that are outlined in your syllabus. How much of your studying is following along with the assignments on the class syllabus, and how much is independent? Also, do you spend a lot of your studying time learning new material that you didn't learn in class, or is it mostly reviewing?
