Asian obsession with prestige

In California,

CMC would probably be harder to get into.
UC Berkeley is actually not as hard to get into as some people might think it is

but in terms of who’s hard of what school in Asia, I can’t tell. I don’t have any hard evidence.

In this year’s admissions cycle, it looks like Brown and Columbia may have similar selectivity compared to Harvard, Yale, or Princeton. This year, Brown should have an acceptance rate below 10%. Yet, the fact remains that HYP are significantly more prestigious than Brown.

I think this thread is getting ridiculous, for numerous reasons, I am ashamed I am contributing to it.

But to the OP far, far back on Page 1 of this thread, I can identify with the whole Asian prestige thing. I was also compelled by my parents to go to a top-ranked school.

Self-awareness is a good thing.

"In California,

CMC would probably be harder to get into.

i second this.

OP is confusing prestige w/ being well-known.

A school like UIllinois is better known (and hence, better regarded) in Japan than a LAC like Bowdoin, even tho Bowdoin is generally considered more prestigious (particularly on the EC).

Otoh, if one were to attend uni in Japan, where one goes does matter since the big corporations and govt. (the biggest employers) generally hire from the top 10-15 schools.

In Japan and other parts of Asia, college and even high school ties/relationships are more impt. for business/govt. than here in the US.

CMC is **** in prestige. I live in Cali and I have never heard of CMC until college application season. No, I haven’t been clueless about colleges until senior year. I’ve still heard of all the HYPMS, ivies, caltech, rice, NYU, UChicago, williams, amherst, swarthmore, etc…

but seriously, berkeley is a ****ing big deal in asia. it’s common for people in my school to get in berkeley and go to a more elite school like HYPMS. However, they still keep that Berkeley acceptance letter, sometimes even frame that. this is because their parents care, and want to show it off to friend’s overseas. you wouldnt show off a CMC letter to your aunt in hong kong.

THis is ********. Claremont McKenna is equally good if not better than UC Berkeley. I’m an international student from Asia, and let me tell you all something, over here, the knowledgable people who count, not those dumbasses who only get their info from parents and local relatives, would definitely pick CMC over Berkeley, unless they’re into research and all that.

“I live in Cali and I have never heard of CMC until college application season.”

wow, if you’ve never heard of it, CMC MUST not be prestigious!! by the way, curse much? -_-

are we talking abt lay prestige? if so, isnt it obvious that Berkeley has higher lay prestige than CMC… but that speaks more to people’s relative ignorance about CMC rather than CMC’s academic quality.

^what the heck is lay prestige? lol.

prestige among the general public… not prestige in academia.

wow, if you’ve never heard of it, CMC MUST not be prestigious!! by the way, curse much? -_-

stupid woman, why are you stating the obvious? prestigious means most people have heard of it, it ranks well, has accomplished many things, etc…

most LAC’s aren’t prestigious. amherst, williams are some exceptions.
