Asian with a non-asian last name

Hey guys!

So I just wanted to find out if when applying to colleges, will college admission officers be able to look at your ethnicity?

OR do they perceive your ethnicity through your last name?

My Last name is supposedly Asian.
BUT my name was some how "americanized" (i'm 1st generation college student) when my father immigrated to the U.S.

You may be asking, why is this asian guy asking this?

Well it appears that asians have a particularly hard time going through the college admissions process then the rest of the people. Our average SAT is 1623. Which is complete WHOA WHOA WHHOAAAA. that's like overkill. seriously.

CONCLUSION: so am i allowed to hide my ethnicity and only present my last name so the officers won't know i'm asian, and thus i will increase my chances.

ANY ANSWERS ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED

A lot of college applications have a “Decline to State” option for ethnicity. You could choose that. Otherwise, I don’t think it’s a good idea to hide your ethnicity if they explicitly ask for it.

oh! i never knew that! but if i can hide it, would it make my chances higher for getting admitted to schools? thanks in advance for responding!

common guys!! 22 views and only 1 person has the heart to respond?

Yeah, some schools have a ‘decline’ option which you should use.

Note that if you do not list your ethnicity, most colleges will assume the worst (that you are Asian). This is because you would have no other reason to hide your ethnicity unless it would put you at a disadvantage.

Checking the decline box is not necessarily hiding ethnicity. The motivation behind asking an applicant to choose one among the arbitrary array of “races” the boxes represent repulses some people. There are many ways ethnicity may be manifest on an application.

I never knew you could decline that! xD

Thanks guys!!!

Anymore opinions are greatly welcomed

Thanks you all!!

Nonsense, Zealously. There are many reasons one would decline to answer this question. The college simply won’t take it into consideration. I encourage my teenager not to check off the box, also. She has nothing to hide; I simply don’t think they should be judging her on this.

but wouldn’t it help me? asians average SAT score is 1623, T_T really high for the average person. so like… i guess i would do it but what do you think?
