Asians and College Prestige.

Go to any hospital that deals with major illness daily, like cancer and such, and tell me how many of the doctors are Indians, how many are some other asian race, and how many are non-asian. Maybe it's just around here, but every hospital I've been to, 4/5 doctors are some kind of asian if not indian.

Indian Institute of Technology is better than those 3 combined? Don't make me laugh

[/QUOTE]

It is. YOu try to get in. You could get a 36 on the ACT and a 2400 on the SATs and do ECs like your life depended on it, plus keep a 4.0+ GPA all through high school, and youd have a hell of a time gettin in. FRESHMAN in IIT GET JOB OFFERS FOR $200,000+ FROM THE BIGGEST TECH COMPANIES IN THE WORLD.

Hyperbole gone too far. I live next door to an Indian person who graduated from IIT for both his B.S. and M.S. He's working at Intel, but he doesn't make anywhere near $200k. Last time I talked to him he told me he was making around $80k per year, and how that wasn't nearly enough (after taxes) for him to send home to his parents after his expenses.

um Scar, it is tougher cause there are SO many7 applicants. Let me tell u this

1 More people, more applicants
2 people in Kota, RAjasthan, study for 10 hours a day have NO EC's and do nothing. They get in too. Get into harvard with that

3 IIT isnt better than any other. It is great but so is MIT or Clatech, Harvard, Rice or CMU.

IIT isnt that good as the offers suggest. The people are good. teching is subpar Vs. other cols

The IIT-JEE was easy this year.

I didn't say every person who went to IIT did. In fact, very few people do, but my point is, how many freshman at Harvard get job offers like that?

see, SCaR.. main thing is this. IIT is good we all know. But its not the end of the world.

Now, this is dumb bashing one university for another... all I can say is. IIT is finished if they introdue the 49.5% reservation.

And lewisloftus, unfortunately, most people are zombies here for medicine or engineering. If u want to do anything else, people think u CoULDNT do the big two..

So many people have told me im going to US because its 'easier'.. had my parents and all not been there I would have slapped them

I love math and science. [well HELL NO if math and science is what I learn at school , cause that stuff is boring]

I speak (insert asian language) - Hindi

I want to go to HYPSM/UC Berkeley/UCLA/Gtown/Northwestern/some other brand name college. [x]

I want to become a doctor/engineer. [surgeon[

I want to/intend to live in LA. [beverley hills]

I take/intend to take any three of the following: AP Bio/AP Chem/AP Phys B or C/AP Calc BC. [ap physics]

Your parents think anything below 2200 is horrible. [:(]

bumpbumpbump

YOu'd think we've had enough posts on the topic. Asians are forced to go to Prestigous colleges by thier parents. Happy, that should start a contrversy that'll last atleast 20 posts.

Mostly. Asian parents believe that as they took their kids to this country, in return, parents want to see their children getting education from one of the finest institutions of America. Yet, it's sad how parents FORCE their children to do that. Yes, FORCE.

Hm. I guess most asians are obsessed about college prestige. Most parents here only care about National University of Singapore, and forget the other universities on offer. I'm from Singapore, and usually only the scholarship holders get to go to HYPMS, and competition among the top schools is fierce, like anywhere else in the world.

but india is just freaky. nuclear physics at grade 9?

I'm in grade 11, and physics is my worst class. I barely have a B+ (87.02) so there.

I can say academic success is in the gene of asian people. In ancient asia(like a thousand years ago), the only way to leave poverty and attain power and money is to study, study, and study. Because governments recuited officials through exams. Who ever got the highest grade in a national exam would became important goverment officals, who had so much prestiage in the society. This system had lasted for about thousands of years. Therefore, academic success is so deep-rooted in asian society.
Don't blame your parents. Cuz they just want you to do well and get rich. This idea is more amplified in America as a lot of Asian parents have gone through so much in order to be in here. . I think your parents will allow you guys to do what you want if they know you will be happy and succeed instead of failing. They are all for you at the end.

That's not the central issue -- Im sure the majority of asian children do believe that their parents want the best. That said, the contention is between the parents' definition of 'best' versus the student's.

:)

I think a large part of the resentment may stem from the fact that many Asian parents, who "force" (or at least push very hard) their children to do well in school and get accepted to top universities (HYMPS), never did well in school themselves. There's an obvious disconnect there, as they may not know how stressful academia is or what it takes to actually get into that top 1%.

Cslaw, that's not true. Many asians (and indians) are very educated, there's a good chance the Indian guy owning the motel you stayed in has a graduate degree in chemistry. Asians come from very education=ticket to success cultures, where business either operates at a bigtime (steel magnate) or very small-time (shopkeeper) levels, so the ticket to success for them comes through education (become a doctor or engineer).

Another episode of my mom's quotes:

"You got a 1940? That's HORRIBLE!!!!"
"Business is not YOUR THING."
"Your personality fits that of an engineer even though you almost failed physics."
"People who can't become doctors/lawyers/engineers become business majors."
"So and so got into Berkeley!!!! And you?!!!!?!?!!"

And more rants about doctors making more money than traders.....and all this other stuff.....and more misconceptions.

And more rants about doctors making more money than traders"

ouch.

Suck it up and stop *****ing about Asian parents, ihateCA. It appears to me that you feel incapable of dealing with your parents at all. Do you really have no way out? I don't think so.

The question is, did you get into UCB?
