Ask a 2 Andover Sophmore!!

Thanks swimdude!!! Rooms don’t come with dressers? Will I have to bring my own or do students mainly use closets? And also, how does the laundry system work and what would I need to bring that isn’t provided (like toiletries)?

I’m sorry for bothering you, but I have a few questions!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-cafe/1481044-phillips-academy-andover.html

I made a thread, but I’ll check here to see f you answer anything, also. :P

What is an appropriate outfit for revisit day? I was thinking an Andover t-shirt, jeans, and a sweater. Is that ok, or should I wear something a little nicer?

Hi, I was wait listed at Andover (as well as Deerfield and Exeter) and was wondering if you knew anyone who was wait listed? And since this year is supposed to be über competitive in terms of admission could I be taken off? My stats are below.

85% percentile on SSAT
Straight A’s in all advanced classes at an already advanced public school now straight A’s at new school in Cayman Islands
Took honors Latin
Now taking Spanish at level that people who have been learning for 3+ years
State Rugby Champ
Nationally Ranked debater
Pretty sociable and a people person
Am now learning Tenor Sax
Go to an International school in the Cayman Islands
Have a rec who is a CEO of a billion dollar company and went to Exeter

Juliet16: forgot a dresser and closet lol my bad. As for laundry, you can either do your own ($1.25 per load, need to provide your own detergent that you can get from cvs/the den, need to do your own ironing), or you can get the campus laundry service. I did my own last year, and was fine. This year, I have the campus laundry service, and it is very convenient. They dry clean, fold and press yiur clothes, and even do linens and sheets. My advice is try doing your own first, and if you do need some help, put your stuff in a friend’s campus laundry load (though make sure you have the same size clothing or else he/she will get fines big bucks).

Jackpa: it really doesn’t matter. Dressing in a polo and jeans would’t hurt. Just dress appropriately. Most kids will wear jeans and a casual.button down or they will go all preppy

Theduke9999: I don’t feel comfortable judgin whether or not you have a good chance of getting in. I don’t feel like i have the authority to do so. What I can say, however, os that AOs can contact you as late as two weeks before school starts. Just write to your interviewer in a thiughtful letter expressing how PA is your fist choice, and wait and see what happens. Remember that you can make the best of what you are given. So what you don’t have challenging classes: self study for APs and ace you current courses. Build up passions for your current ECs and get involved in even more. Use the prep school application process as an experience. Best of luck though!

Zizobahnasy: will pm you tomorrow. I’m on my iphone and my fingers are tired!!

Two questions:
How do I request a certain dorm on the housing form? Should I write my choice under “Other Housing Preferences”, or is there something else I should do?
How do you hang posters? It’s kind of a stupid question, but I can’t anything useful online.
Thanks!!

yup under Other Housing Preferences, put the dorm you’re trying to request. For hanging posters, get poster putty (the blue/grey stuff)

Bump on it. Kemosabi, bump on it.

Anybody? Nobody? Hmm…

@jackpa Honestly i would say it is A LOT easier to order everything online and send it Andover so that it will be waiting for you in the mailroom when you arrive. I remember going to Walmart Frosh orientation weekend and I just ended up wasting a lot of time there to get all my remaining supplies . . . its stressful trust me! You’re way better off sending everything.

@Juliet16 Yay! 16’ RepreSENT (I’m a returning Lower ^_^).
Anyway, my first week at Andover is kind of a blur haha . . . but the work definitely wasn’t hard. The teachers take care to ease you into the courses freshman year, because they know that making a transition to Andover can be tough. Since this doesn’t apply to you as a new lower though, I don’t really know what to say. I can tell you for sure that the workload won’t be bad at all for the first one or two weeks, but then you’ll probably feel it slightly piling up. You are lucky in a way though, because most of your classmates have already been at Andover for a year so you’ll be able to learn fast from them on how to manage your time etc. Whereas freshmen take a lot longer to figure that stuff out because they are all in the same boat as newbies.

^on that note, just remember to be social! For new uppers, especially if you’re in a new upper dorm, it may be hard for you to integrate with the rest of lowers. Just put yourself out there!

Hi swimdude!
I have a few questions…
Do I have to bring a mirror for my room?
Are we allowed to bring a drying rack for clothes?
and since I’m going to do my own laundry, can I bring an iron and a board for pressing my clothes?
Also, are there any deals by which I can purchase a laptop through the school?
Thanks so much :)

Hi! I was wondering if it is hard to get into Andover, are the staff nice, and what are the dorms like? Thanks!

Juliet:
-you get a mirror that’s good enough so you can see yourself neck-up. If you want a full body view, you need to bring your own
-yes
-no
-I have no clue (sorry!). I do know you can purchase microsoft word from the school for very cheap, although they take it off from your computer after your time at PA is over. call the PAC and ask! you’ll definitely need a laptop though

kitkat: yes, it is very hard! any school with a sub 25% acceptance rate is a crapshot, and PA’s is a 13%! Staff are nice, though some nicer than others… As for dorms, it all depends on which dorm and what gender. Girls generally have nicer dorms b/c they’ve been renovated pretty recently. They generally have bigger rooms as well. Rooms can be singles (1 room, 1 person), 1 room double (1 room, two people), 2 room double (2 rooms, two people), 3 room double (3 rooms, 2 people), and 3 room triple (3 rooms, 3 people). One cool dorm, stewart (guys dorm), has balconies for some rooms and you can access you rooms through doors that lead ouside! Some dorms have attic rooms where one room takes up a majority of an attic!

Hi,
I am a singaporean who wishes to apply for Exeter/ Andover next year.
May I enquire about how you got accepted into Andover?

 1. SSAT - What did you prepare for SSAT and how long did you spent preparing for the test? Do you have any tips on how to ace the SSAT test?

Interview - What were some of the questions the interviewer asked? I read on this forum that they asked the usual questions, but I heard from one of my friends that they asked weird questions like “apples or oranges”. Can you please enlighten me on some of the questions the interviewer asked, and how you answered them?

Essays - For andover, you have to write a few essays / answer questions. How did you write the essays? Any tips? Does it have to be written in good english, or just to show more of my personality? Is it advisable to include my achievement in some of the question? Any suggestions on how to score well for the essay, other than being truthful?

Thank you for answering all my questions, I hope I am able to join you next year at Exeter / Andover, ( I am applying for grade 11).
