Ask a BGSU Grad Anything!

I’ve seen this kind of thread for other schools and thought I’d start one for good ol’ BG. I’m not an expert on everything, but I’ll be happy to answer general questions (and specific ones if possible). I love BG but can also be honest about its shortcomings. Ask away, if anyone is out there!

hey i plan on transferring to BG in a year or 2. my major is sports management and i hear they have one of the best sm programs in the country. im leaning toward being a sports journalist so i could minor in journalism there. it sounds like a perfect fit for me. ive been up for a visit and i loved the campus. it felt like home. so i would just like to know any info about their sports management program. thanks! :)

Yes, BG has a very good sports management program. There are two particularly good things about being an SM major at BG:

They have relationships with a lot of professional sports organizations, both teams and broadcasters, nationally as well as regionally. SM majors get internships (for credit) with these organizations and are often employed by them after graduation. This web page lists some of the organizations BG is connected to:

[BGSU :: School of Human Movement, Sport, & Leisure Studies :: Sport Management Field Experiences](http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/edhd/hmsls/smrt/smd/page58812.html)

As a “mid-major”, BG is one of the easier Division I schools to get significant experience at. It’s not too hard to get involved with, say, the football team, who play BCS-conference opponents every year. And yet, since it’s a MAC program, you won’t have so much competition for the really coveted assisting and internship positions. The basketball and hockey programs (national champs in '84) also offer significant opportunities.

The sports facilities have been significantly upgraded in the last few years. Although they still don’t rival top Division I schools’, they’re still pretty good and getting better. Here are some links about the facilities, including the new Stroh Center, under construction:

I hope this is helpful. Good luck.

Yeah BG is at the top of my list. They other schools im looking at is OSU, OU, and UC but BG looks like it has the most to offer

Hi, I’ve been looking into BGSU, I applied and got accepted. I’m now to the decision making part of my college journey.
I’ll be majoring in Creative Writing, and I’ve heard that BG has a really good CWRIT program. But I’ve been looking at other review sites, and there are alot students saying
a) there is alot of drinking activity
b) Greek life is HUGE
c) Students really have to push teachers to get the level of education they want (pretty much, you’ll survive if you’re a brown-noser)
d) It’s small
c) It’s in a tiny empty town

How much of this is true, at least from your perspective? Is there anything else I should know about BG? I really want to make sure I’m making the right decision. :)

Really good? I don’t know about that. BG is not Harvard or even Michigan, but it rivals Ohio State and other big schools in some areas. But among schools of its caliber, BG has some particularly strong programs, and creative writing is said to be one. People who don’t like BG generally want a huge-school or big-city experience; based on the quality of education alone, it’s a very good undergraduate experience. Compared to schools that are statistically and geographically similar, such as Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Kent State, Akron, Toledo, Marshall, and so on, BG is among the best.

If you’re a social butterfly, then drinking and Greek life are probably going to be among your main activities. But I lived on campus for four years doing little of either, and I still enjoyed it. My brother is there now, is a serious student, and is doing something interesting every night that doesn’t (usually) involve alcohol.

One person’s brown-noser is another person’s engaged student. In other words, you don’t have to kiss up to your professors, but you do have to approach them and show that you care; they won’t somehow recognize that you’re special unless you speak up. At a school BG’s size, you can either blend in and be anonymous to your teachers, or you can stand out and get extra attention, and it’s under your control.

Only compared to Ohio State. BG has the same number of undergrads as Pitt and Arkansas, for example, and I don’t think those schools are considered small.

That is true. Life revolves around the campus and the immediate vicinity, where the bars and pizza places are. Downtown BG is nice enough, but not exciting, and the nearest big city, Toledo, is not very special. Don’t go to BG if you’re looking for a vibrant off-campus experience.

The flip side is that they make an effort to make leaving campus unnecessary with social events, places to eat, and of course Division I sports all happening regularly.

How good is the Psych program? I’ve already been accepted, but I’m starting to make my final decisions on where I want to go.

BG is strong in applied psychology, particularly as it relates to business and organizations (so-called I-O psychology, meaning industrial and organizational). A couple of the professors (Steve Jex and Scott Highhouse) publish regularly in the Journal of Applied Psychology, and there is quite a bit of interaction between the Psychology Department and the business school on that front.

As for psychology generally, the program is well-regarded, but I can’t tell you how it compares to other schools.

im a serious student but i also like to loosen up and party haha i heard bgsu is one of the top party schools in the country. right below OU in Athens. is that true? i mean i guess if theres 20 bars and clubs in bg and ur basically in a cornfield lol theres really nothing else to do haha

There is lots of partying in BG, so if that’s your thing, you’re golden. It’s not the only thing to do, but as you said, in a cornfield…
