Ask a current UCR freshman anything!

Congrats on your Admittance to UCR!

If you are offered Summer classes via Summer Bridge, take it! as arcadefire1027 said, the classes are offered to incoming students who placed in lower levels for their english of math placement exams. It is a nice head start exposure to college, and classes are only mon-thurs! You will be placed in West Lo, but it is really not that bad, just bring a fan to keep you cool. Being able to leave you door unlocked it pretty cool and you make friends fast! You also get 3 meals a day which is pretty neat, just don't load up on the Freshmen 15!

MehediMD: are your chemistry teachers helpful and welcoming of students in their office hours?

Are you in any special programs? (ie. the honors program, etc.) If so, what's it like? How about any clubs?

How welcoming is the student body?

Is it easy to get around campus? Is it safe?

Did you get your first choice housing? and is it possible to not get first choice?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, I'm HIGHLY considering UCR for next year, and I just want the transition from HS to college easy. hahah.

Hi i have a couple questions

First of all, how is engineering department or more specifically electrical engineering?

How is the library and are the teachers willing to help if you go ask them?

Is the dorm spacious or crappy? and how many people per dorm?

hi...sorry if my questions are worded weirdly

How much larger is a triple than a double at pentland hills and would there be the same number of rooms in each suite if there was a triple in the suite?

Are there any advantages to being in the pre-business hall?

Does a flex 5 meal plan mean that i only get one meal a day? Like only a dinner and then for every other meal, i have to use dining dollars?

How's the business major?

thanks

ok i need to write a lot less! hahaha
hope the information helps.

The engineering college is ranked very highly for its size! Its the smallest of the three colleges, so its students get a lot of personalized attention. the labs they have are amazing! I live next to the engineering hall, interesting bunch of smarties, lol the engineering college works with a lot of top name industries and there is always research available for undergrads. yeah i sound like a robot but im really being honest, lol. i came across one of the profs there and he is doing some amazing work, but its chemical engineering so uhg, i guess does not apply. EE, as you'll soon identify yourself as, is a physics heavy major. infact a girl im very close with is an EE(there, i sound more human now), shes loving the classes shes taking and the work shes doing, also BCOE (your college) has a lot of special perks that the other colleges don't: access to bcoe labs, computers labs and equipment n other cool stuff that i as a cnas (sci college) only get to see because i work for the campus.
Library is amazing! seriously come take a tour! i take my groups into the sci library which cnas/bcoe kids use. its the perfect place to study and do work. the UC libraries are rank just below the library of congress, so yeah its good! if we dont have something here in rside, it will be sent here from the other UC.
Like i mentioned in xobgg's reply, profs are really willing to help you out. they know undergrad students need the help, specially first years as they transition to college.

Dorms can be spacious if you make it so. otherwise they are just a regular college dorm (not big but not too small). I've arranged my room in such a fashion that i can fit a queen sized air bed on the floor and have friends sleep over. My room is one of the ones on display so if you want to see it ask for H212 in Pentland Hills =D its two students per room, and there are triples but i highly discourage anyone having to live in them...

my replies are gradually getting shorter, sorry for the long read. hope it helps!

The triples are larger than double in terms of vertical space. The triples are located on the top floor of the buildings, where the double rooms have very high ceilings. a loft is fitted into the double sized room, and two mattress are placed up there, and one bed+mattress on the bottom(with desk, chairs, closets etc). So yes a suite will have the same number of rooms (4) even if it has triples in it. i highly recommend a double. period. if youre placed in a triple when you wanted a double, its because you applied late into the application process for housing and the only way you could still live in the suite style Pentland Hills was to live in a triple.

pre-business hall, go for it! its nice to have ppl around you who are the same major. you can form study groups and help each other out with homework. the RA is a really cool dude too, Jimmy for pentland. I think he is coming back next year. regardless, the RA helps you with special business programs and dinners and mock interviews and other cool stuff! i live in the science hall, and we all take around the same classes and it just all works out. Sci minds make sci jokes and bond, business majors crack business jokes and bond? idk. overall its worth it, lol

flex max flex mas flex max. unless you plan on eating off campus or cooking(it takes up time, i gave up after first quarter), you want flex max! flex 5 is for ppl who eat off campus, and yes you only get 5 meals, meaning 5 meals... maybe 3 one day and 2 the next, or one a day, but pretty much 5 meals a week. flex max gives you no meals, however 3450 dinning dollars to use anywhere on campus! eat at the barn! i only eat at the dorms at night for dinner, but lunch is always at the barn or commons.

business major is pop-u-lar! only rside and cal have very well planted undergrad business schools. irvine is still new and upncoming (n thats why i like to think of it as non existent, haha). so it goes without saying that risde has a very good business program to be the only other UC to have an undergraduate business school than cal. you come in as pre-business, and then declare business-admin or business-econ after your 2nd year. and concentration and maybe a minor and etc etc.

(in uc-speak, cal = Berkeley, if you didnt know)

take a tour of campus when you get here, or even before you get here! its good to know places like the barn(amazing food!) and where you go for free concerts every wednesday, free bbq on fridays? what?!, and how many holes there are in the belltower! ok maybe not the last one, but 5,162 is alot! haha
plus you might get to meet this goofball named Mehedi.

n no im not getting paid to answer questions here, im just trying to help incoming students cuz hell i had 1000s of questions when i was picking schools!

keep em' coming folks!

MehediMD thank you for your answer! its very helpful

Like many people ive been under the stereotype that UCR is a lame school but after reading many posts in the forum, it changed my perspective. Unfortunately, i havent applied at UCR back in november, which i regret it now. (I was guaranteed admission) I really like the fact that professors are willing to help. I heard from other students who attends uci and ucsd that professors doesnt have much time for their students

I heard that UCR is still taking students under the UCExcellence thing. Couple of my friends recieved email but i havent (how do they choose who to send) and ive been excellent student in my school with high test scores.

Now im really considering attending UCR, so my question is that without UCExcellence email, would admission officer consider my late application? i sent an email but i got a lame response that didnt even matter with what i wrote: some info about regular fall registration date.

I sent them another email and im expecting to give them a call if nothing happens.

Call undergraduate recruitment. our counselors normally have answers to this kind of questions and will try to see if they can direct you to the right departments. If you are accepted to other UCs then you should be able to get into rside.
hope it all works out!
MyUCR: Meet a Counselor

the High School Recruitment counselors are really chill and helpful

thanks ill be sure to call them tomorrow.

if i indeed go to UCR ill go meet you and give you my thanks for all your information ;)

regarding the rec programs, do many people join those or is it just something that no one wants to do?

if so, what are some of the more popular ones? thanks!

Regarding the pre-business hall, is that in a particular building (AI, Lothian, Pentland Hills)?

How politically active is UCR?

I ask this because I am a political science major and I am VERY much into politics and student activism.

thanks Mehedi!

I really want to major in nursing, but I know UCR doesn't have that major available. What's the closest thing to it?

Thanks for carrying some of the load Mehedi, haha. However, I'd like to note that my chemistry professor was terrible about office hours and was hardly available at all. Granted, this might be an exception to the rule but I just wanted to note that experience of mine. As for political activity, there are plenty of clubs on campus, such as the young democrats and young republicans. I don't know just how active they are though, as I've never seen them in my day-to-day life, though I do get a lot of emails from each party.

My take on meal plans: I have flex-10 and that's perfect for me. However, I don't eat breakfast, usually just lunch and dinner (though I'll miss a meal or two to eat in the room sometimes). But flex max just gives you an infinite amount of spending money, which is sweet but costly. I have friends with flex max that just raid the C store every single day buying food for themselves and all their friends, and STILL don't use all their money, haha.

ouch!!
sorry to hear that! esp a chem prof, seriously upsetting! (cuz im a chem major, heh)
it is true some profs are really bad. as with other universities and ucr alike, there will always be the ones that, you know, dont speakie englishes, and the ones who are teaching at the university level for the first time (math9hb nightmare!). and in your case, just bad at being there for their students. luckily it seems the good profs outweigh the bad. and the iEval things are nice. Allows students to honestly put down what they think about a prof. for my math9hb prof i gave him the evaluation he deserved >=D

oh, and max cost $300 (real money, haha) more than flex10. for some its worth it, for some its not. spending 3,450dining dollars in one year takes some time. and raiding the c-store is always fun, lol

For off-campus housing, what apartments are recommended that are close to the campus and are open to freshman?
