Ask a current UCR freshman anything!

I wish there were more pictures of UCR

"For off-campus housing, what apartments are recommended that are close to the campus and are open to freshman?"

I am staying at sterling right now I like it. Its clean, the room is big, close to campus, and comes with a 40" TV. I also heard good things about university village towers but rooms are smaller.

Highlander Day

check it out

So I hear that Riverside is kinda boring...

I'm deciding between UV Towers and GrandMarc for off-campus apartments. Are both about the same, or is one better than the other?

GrandMarc has shootings/gunshots and robberies. UV Towers is definately better!

I probably missed the answer to this question, but if you could answer this question of mine (again..if it has been answered already), that'll be awesome.

I'm kind of in a bind. According to my UCR account, it says that I have to take the English placement exam. The only date available that says we can take the test is on May 9, 2009. That date is coincidentally the same day as my senior prom. So...I don't think I have enough time to go to UCR to take the test and come back for my senior prom.

I just want to ask if there are other days available to take that test. I know there is a Summer Bridge Program, but according to the UCR website, it says we have to take the placement test at least before the Orientation day...which is during the summer. But if I can't take it on May 9, 2009, am I supposed to take the Summer Bridge Program? I'm really confused about this. And what if I can't make it to both the Summer Bridge Program and the Placement Exam date (May 9, 2009)? Do I register for an English course that is equivalent to the Placement exam credit during my first quarter of Freshman Year? Does taking the class during the first quarter mean I have to also take the placement exam as well? Or can I just pass the class with a C or better?

Thanks for answering my question (...that eventually turned into multiple questions). Sorry about that.

I have to take it too, same day as prom. I heard the placement starts at like 7-8am though, so should be fine

Have you checked if you even need to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)? Check here: Entry-Level Writing Requirement: Before Enrolling Full-Time at UCR
There is also information about taking the test after enrolling, summer options, etc.

I didn't need to take it because I got credit from my AP English Composition and AP English Literature exams. I was automatically placed into ENGL001C and skipped ENGL004 and ENGL001A/B. Most people place into ENGL004 or ENGL001A after taking the APWE.

I'm not familiar with the Summer Bridge Program, but I am sure that you don't NEED to take it just because you can't take the APWE on the original date before starting classes in the fall.

If you don't have AP/IB/community college credit, you have to take the APWE BEFORE enrolling in an English class because it determines the level of the English class that you are supposed to be placed in. Passing the class that you were first placed into with a C or better will move you into the next level of English classes.

Thank you for your response. And yeah I checked that site. I have to take it, since I did not get the required score for English Language and Compostion or the required score for the Writing portion on the SAT. As for English Literature AP, I'm taking the class right now, but I'm going to take the exam this May. Btw, where did you find out what classes you're supposed to take? Or was it just the English class you know you got into?

@pete21:
Is it really 7 AM/8AM? =/ If it is...I guess I can take it...but I'm not entirely sure. If it's in the afternoon, then I don't really think I can go ^^; which sucks. :/ I just want to pass it and get it over with. Lol.

Thanks for your replies!

Forevermore -
Oh, if you pass the AP English Lit. exam with 3 or better then you will get credit for ENGL001A and will be placed into ENGL001B, if you decide to enroll in an English class for your first quarter at UCR. ENGL001A/B/C is the actual English 3-course sequence that you have to take. ENGL004 doesn't count as your general ed. because it helps you for 1A. So, in other words, you can't just do 004/1A/1B and be done.

I'm in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS). I found out my breadth requirements from meeting with my academic adviser during summer orientation. I got a results paper saying that I didn't take the APWE, but I also got another paper with my AP credits, so my adviser told me. I'm sure the breadth requirements are mostly the same across the three colleges but there are always exceptions; better to ask your academic adviser when you meet them during orientation. Or someone who is in the same college as you are in.

@shesasensation:
Oh...so if I'm going to take the English Literature AP exam this year in May anyways, then is it okay if I miss the exam on May 9, 2009? And do I wait for the summer orientation to see whether or not I need to take the exam (considering if I didn't pass the English Lit AP exam and that I missed the May 9, 2009 testing date)?

Thanks for your fast reply!

Forevermore -
Hmm. Well, I would go ahead and take it just in case you don't pass the AP exam. Because if you don't pass, you're going to have to take the APWE afterwards no matter what to get placed into an English class. Better safe than sorry, you know?

And if it's at 7-8am like someone else said, then it's doable. The exam last year was on the same date as my prom last year as well, and my friend took it before he went to prom (Then again, he only had to worry about a suit. :P). They give you two hours to write a response, but you can finish earlier than that and leave, I think.

Yeah that's true. Hopefully it's in the morning, if not, then I'll probably go ask a counselor about it.
Thanks shesasensation!

What sport programs does UCR have?

What if I plain on joining one as a walk-on? Do they have try-outs for each sport (Track and Field specifically)?

UCR offers 17 different Division-I sports.
At the UCR Athletics website, http://www.gohighlanders.com/ they have information on all of individual sports for men and women. For most of the sports, there is a section that says "prospective athletes," which will guide you to contacting the departments. For you it will say "Want to run at UCR?" We also have clubsports/intramural sports if you don't want to jump into Devesion I sports. Go Highlanders!

I would also advise you to take the placement exam on the morning of your prom date. Like mentioned before, it only lasts 2 hours. If you are to miss the placement exam, UCR will ask you to take it during your orientation. I believe on the first day of your orientation during one of the longer segments where most of the students are at one of the main activities, you will be taking an exam. For most students this activity is the highlight of orientation, so its best you not miss it! The placement exam is a UC wide requirement, so its just one of the things that has to be done on the way to college. The Summer Bridge program is only offered to students who place at a lower level English. It is intended to allow the students to take that class over the summer rather than be a quarter behind everyone else once the school year begins in Fall. Housing and meals are provided and it does qualify for summer financial aid (meaning fin-aid is not subtracted from your regular school year aid amount).
Best of luck to ya and have fun at prom!

GrandMarc looks very nice. ok it looks amazing! My current room mate is living there next year. However, it does have a bad reputation for having things stolen and lots of noise and parties and etc.
UV Towers are right across the street. The bedrooms have a queen sized bed and each of them has its own bathroom. Still the bedrooms are a bit "small".
Sterling is very nice too. Rooms are big and have a lot of space, plus you can have that 40" TV mentioned before for a very small fee.

@MehediMD:
haha. Thanks for the response as well. So...the Placement Teast in the morning for sure? I hope it is, since the site doesn't really say anything about the time. :/

question about housing contract

If I submit it right now can I change it later? Like, I would like to request a roomate but I'm not sure if they are actually going to Riverside yet, so would I be able to request them later?

and also, what if i submitted my housing payment before my housing contract, is that ok?

thanks in advance
