I’m currently taking calculus

originally, I signed up to take the MAE on the 26th of May, but after taking a look at the practice exam, I realized that I had forgotten some of the stuff I’ve learned from a while ago. I started to feel a bit unsure of myself and made another reservation on the 23rd of next month. I’m currently taking trig/precalc as a senior and I would like to study more, but I have to turn in my textbooks before graduation. Also, alg/geo textbooks aren’t available to me. Any advice/suggestions? Or am I just worrying needlessly? Is there anyone who had taken the MAE before and knows if the practice exam is harder/easier/about the same as the real exam?

hello~ i just have a question about the mae exam. i was placed into lncr 35… the algebra workshop over the summer. i don’t know how that works. i don’t live near riverside so i don’t think i can commute back and forth. can i take it during the fall or spring? if so, do i have to take the workshop as my “general education”? does that mean i can’t graduate in 4 years?

also i read that i can ask a counselor at the orientation but the summer fees are due today… but i wasn’t notified until yesterday about my math results…

so i guess what i’m worried about is how i’m going to take this workshop over the summer and still fulfill my get requirements so i can graduate in 4 years…

please help!

hi, i am going to ucr this fall and i decided to live in pentland. Do u know if its convenient around? cos i heard its far away from the buildings.
Thanks.

The walk is honestly no issue at all. With any of the dorms you will have to walk a lot (depending on the building you need to go to). It is super convenient to live in any of the dorms.

There are also a lot of shortcuts to get to the different dorms. For example, you can cut through A&I/its parking lot and get to Pentland quickly.

I’m going to be a new freshmen in the Fall and I had a few questions:

I want a BS degree but can I still take some foreign languages classes because I really want to?

If I got placed into English004 but I passed the AP exam does that mean I will get placed in English1A?

How would you suggest planning your classes for the first time?

-Depends on the college. I know BCOE doesn’t require a language, so you’d have to work something out with your adviser or declare the language as a minor.

-I’m 90% sure, but check with your adviser during orientation.

-Don’t try to take on too many classes at once. Lots of freshmen take just three classes (mostly intro breadth requirements) their first quarter so they can get used to the quarter system and school. Knock out some easier classes first (discussion-based humanities like PHIL 1, for instance). Pick your class times based on when you work best. If you’re a morning person, take classes earlier in the day. And direct any questions to your adviser, who will be there when you register.

Oh okay thank you for all your help!

Dang… I’m so conflicted with what I want to do in life :x

Don’t worry about it. Few people know what they want to do in life, but college is a great place to start figuring things out. Join clubs, talk to lots of people, and take classes in way different subjects. You’ll be fine!

Haha! Actually I was also wondering since I want to change my major to Engineering I would need to take the math placement test right? Do they give the placement test at Orientation or would I just not be able to take math classes?

Do you have any advice for doing this?

The last day to take the math placement test before the year starts was Sunday. You’re going to have to wait until the test is offered during the fall and you won’t be able to take math classes until winter quarter.

I took trig/precalc my senior year and got A’s for both semester, but I found out that I got placed into math 005 after taking the MAE. Math 005 is precalc… so am i on track?? I feel like I “failed” the test because I’m retaking precalc in my freshman year. I guess I really did forget a lot of things during the summer :(

@davesprite:

There are still exam dates taking place at UCR. You’ll be able to change your major at orientation, but you should call an MAE adviser at 951-827-3281 to discuss your options and see when you should take the exam in time for your orientation.

Worst case scenario, you won’t take any math classes your first quarter, which shouldn’t set you back too much. Just contact an MAE adviser - they’ll be able to help you out.

Here’s a link to the exam dates: http://arc.ucr.edu/mae/spring_summer_dates.html

@sunnyfish:

Don’t worry! Depending on your major, you’ll probably have to take a few more math classes in order to meet your major requirements, but it shouldn’t knock you off track. If you’re worried, you can talk to your adviser in Spring quarter about taking summer classes to fulfill any lingering requirements. Lots of students take summer classes - it’s an excellent option to keep on track, regardless of your major. In any case, chat with your adviser during orientation to talk about your options.

Is 19 units too much for your first quarter at UCR?
I’m planning to double major in Economics and English. I’m thinking of taking
ENG020A (5 units)
MATH5 (5 units)
ECON2 (5 units)
and a 4 unit seminar that I have to take because I’m in the Honors Program.

@elisebear:

Thank you very much for the advice!! I really appreciate it!
Also, do you think I should take the summer bridge so I can be enrolled into math 8A in the fall instead of math 5?
Though summer math classes scares me because they usually go faster than regular school year classes, and I’m not a math person, so I don’t want to end up failing and wasting money in the end…

Has anyone had their transcripts show up on their my ucr? Because my school should have sent them and I’m scared my admission would be cancelled D:

@LapisLazuli: 19 units is definitely too much for most incoming freshman. Also, there is a unit cap and you need approval from your academic advisor to take more than 18 units per quarter.
-In addition, be aware that when you register at orientation that the maximum number of units that you can register for will be 16 units. This is so that other students can get their classes and be registered as full time students. The unit cap comes off during September and that allows most students to register for 18 units at the most.

@sunnyfish: Enrolling in Summer Bridge is completely up to you. I personally would wait for the regular school year to take Math 5. You won’t be behind credit-wise, you’ll save money, it will be slower-paced, and you won’t have to deal with the horrible Riverside heat.

@davesprite: I know some incoming freshmen and their myucr shows that their transcripts have been received. UCR is getting a lot of transcripts and probably AP scores, so it takes some time for them to input everything. Your high school most likely has already sent them. Mine didn’t show up until like two days before the due date. I wouldn’t worry since it’s not due until like the 15th.

@42327119 Thank you! That was very helpful :)

the ap services sent me a mail with my scores on it. i put the ucr college code on my ap statistics exam this year but not my ap euro history that i took in sophomore year. when i logged on to my myucr, my ap scores still weren’t received… its already july 7th.

so when will the ap scores be received? i was wondering if ucr received anyone’s ap scores.

@singingblues: Don’t worry too much. AP scores are received by colleges during the beginning of July. I believe UCR has the scores; it just takes a little time for all of the scores to be inputted. Also, as long as you put the UCR college code on the test this past year, all of the AP scores will be sent to the school.
