this may be a stupid question but is santa barbara expensive? like to buy little things does it cost more than it does at other places? is it ridiculously expensive? i looked on yelp to look at hair salons and the prices for haircuts were like 33$ over here its like 8$… i live in nor cal, stockton…

A few quick questions: Do dorms have irons and ironing boards? Like in the laundry room or available at the front desk or anything? I’m not an ironing fiend but I do have several pieces of clothing that I iron. Also, are there bike pumps available? Do I need to buy either/both? Thanks.

I know for San Nic, I have not found an iron or ironing boards here. But I’ll ask.

You better buy your own bike pump, because there is no public bike pump around here. While you are at it, make sure to buy: Tire slime and WD40 as well.

Is it common for students to take notes on a laptop in class?

In my case (for fssp, Music 11 and Biology). . . not really. plus, sometimes teachers post their lecture notes online.)

You dont need to buy your own bike pump. Just take it to the AS bike store and you can pump up your bike tires for free.

^ yes, but in case its closed. . .you might as well invest $10 on a bike pump, just in case.

FYI, even if the bike shop is closed, you can still pump air. The hose sits outside the building, opposite from the bike path. The only time you can’t use the hose is when the machine breaks down and they’re pretty quick to fix it. If it’s broken one day, you can usually use it the next day.

Thanks! Do you know if there’s a dry cleaner nearby in case I can’t find an iron to borrow?

Are the girls easy here?

Haha I’m sure there’s an abundance of “easy” girls, as well as an abundance of quality girls, as there would be at any college.

Do you know how much student membership is at the rec center?

Free because you automatically pay for it. It’s part of the student fees.

Does my health insurance cover my expenses home during the summer when I am not at school? Or do I have to be within the SB area to receive healthcare? I live in Los Angeles and was curious as how to apply this insurance to my local dentist/doctor/optometrist.

Also, is it hard to be an RA? I really need some tips on cutting down costs for the next two years since I got screwed by FAFSA so anything you can throw at me can be helpful. Thanks ;)

Health insurance cover expenses over the summer/any breaks/any short leaves. However, they won’t cover major medical expenses such as x-rays, surgeries, etc if I remember correctly. You’ll have to read the terms of the insurance for clarification.

They also expect you to go to Student Health first unless you’re x miles away from campus. What the numerical value of x is, you’ll have to read the terms.

I want to say, during the summer, you can pick up a medical card from Student Health, and I would assume you just hand that over to the nurses.

Note: Dental work and eye car are not covered by the provided insurance. They only cover basic care; stuff you can go to a family doctor for.

The difficulty of becoming an RA is really subjective. Some people have it easy while other people have it hard. It’s really based on the people you know and your personality. You will find that most RA’s are outgoing, pretty smart (that’s subjective), and have multiple things going for them. One guy I know who was an RA this past year was really out going, honors student, in CCS, and knew people up the yahoo.

Another guy I knew who was an RA, went out every week, but was in his second year and still not admitted into full major status.

So if you do want to be a RA, just interview for it. There’s a bunch of interviews that you got to go through and if you get in, great. If you don’t, tough.

Thanks for the info tr1p7s! I really want to make use of my health insurance(haven’t had it in 5 years…) so it’s great to know I’ll have it for use when I am not in school.

That’s sounds kinda right for RA’s to be outgoing. I, on the other hand, am not, lol, but I will still try.

hi i am going to be a freshman this fall at ucsb. i registered for three back to back classes, they are only ten minutes apart from each other. would you recomend this or no? are professors good at not going over their designated end class time? thanks im like stressing out over this

I wouldn’t recommend it, there are too many x factors. I’m a new transfer so I don’t know about UCSB specifically, but usually being rushed sucks. Sometimes you might want to stay a couple minutes after class to talk to people/professors/TA’s etc., or a class might run a few minutes too long and you could have trouble getting through people to your next class on time. My personal preference is to give some spacing time so I don’t feel rushed, it also gives me time to retain what I learned before I jump to another subject. Just in general though rushing is not worth knocking all your classes out at once.

my 2c.

@d_dog1234:
my freshman year i had four back-to-back classes. 10 min was more than enough time to get to each class and settle. it’s really not that bad if you could handle high school and their successive periods. also personally i find that spacing my classes out too much becomes too inconvenient after a while because i would return to my dorm room then back to class, etc.

Hi,

1) I just saw the posts and they are really helpful. My brother is going to transfer to UCSB and he is going to be doing economics and accounting track at UCSB in this coming fall and he is wondering how difficult it is?

2) So what do you think he should take in the first quarter as a transfer student ?

3) Are there many GE classes he need to fulfill in order to graduate(he has IGETC)?

4) How many classes he need to take in order to graduate in economics and accounting major?

5) Does he need to declare major? If so, how?

6) Also, are there any specific information he need to know because he missed the orientation

Thank you very much
