How does the whole sharing a kitchen , bathroom, shower, and laundry with multiple people you didn’t know at first work ? and how hard was it too get into the dorm ?
@Comradedrago it honestly wasn’t bad, although sharing a bathroom isn’t entirely pleasant at times. Getting into the dorm wasn’t hard.
Hey Im a student from NYand have a 23 on ACT and 1610 on SAT with a 4.0 weighted GPA. I want to major in film what are my chances, I also applied early action and am the treasurer of a youth board and historian of honor society
@JROBTHEkid hmm…your GPA and ECs are solid. But your test scores leave a lot to be desired. I’d say that you’re looking at a deferral here.
Hello! How are the academics, in general? By that I mean is the first year going to be filled with core classes I need? Also, do you know anything about the English/Creative Writing department?
Oh, another thing: what kinds of things should I put in the essay stating why I want to come to UNCW? I know all of the reasons why I like it, but I have no clue how to format it while not sounding like just another faceless application? I am OOS and nearly 5 hours away so I can’t visit the campus in person unless I am accepted
@Katastrphe your first two years will be mainly spent trying to fulfill University College requirements. These are gen eds and some will even be precursors to your major. Our English/Creative Writing department is one of the strongest in the state, and we have North Carolina’s sole publishing lab. So if you want to become a writer, definitely come here.
As for the “Why UNCW” essay, state facts about the school that show your research. Paint the school in as positive of a light as possible, and say that they are one of your top choices. Also be sure to say how UNCW will help you attain your goals. That worked wonders for me.
Creative Writing is a major that you have to apply to, so while you can take some classes before you’re a declared major, you’re limited to how many you can take until after you’ve been accepted, so at first you’ll have to do ged eds and the pre-reqs.
I don’t know how competitive it is, but here’s the link to applying, just incase you haven’t seen it:
http://uncw.edu/writers/bfa/apply.html
You’d probably want to take easy gen-ed classes with the pre-requisites, just so that you make sure you get the grade you need!
English however isn’t competitive, so you could mix more English classes and gen-eds together starting sophomore year if you’d like to keep some easy classes for later in college.
As for the essay, be honest. What are they reasons that you want to come to UNCW verse another school and what is appealing to you about its program, its opportunities, etc.? It’s obviously appealing to you even though you haven’t gotten a chance to see it, so let them know what excites you about the prospect of coming here.
Hi! I have visited UNCW twice and it is really the only school I want to go to. My application is in and I’m just so nervous about my chances. My GPA is 4.01
SAT. 1170
Good involvement. National Honor Society clubs volunteer work etc I am literally on the website every day!!! What do you think my chances are? Thanks for your help!
Hey @jpzdude!! First of all, before I answer your question, I must ask you: is your SAT score out of 1600? And are you in-state or out-of-state?
Hi! I’m from New Jersey and I actually got
1780 out of 2400.
550 critical reading
620 math
610 essay
Thanks so much! It sounds like you are very happy there!
@jpzdude oh!! I’d say you stand a very good chance of admission given the strength of your application. You should be able to get in.
Hi, just wondering if you know anything about the nursing program? My D applied and we are waiting to hear back? We are OOS from New York.
@gators19 your D would be admitted as a pre-nursing major. This is the most competitive major at UNCW. She would need straight As to get into the nursing program as a rising sophomore…
@Lbad thank you. She did not tell me it was not a direct admit. I appreciate your help.
Well she doesn’t necessarily need to get straight A’s to get in, that certainly would help since the average GPA is very high. Admissions is based 75% GPA (25% Non-science pre-reqs, 50% science pre-reqs) and 25% based of the TEAS score she gets. It won’t matter what her grades are in non-prerequisite classes. I’m a current nursing student here, and while the admission process seems stressful 50 people get admitted into the program every semester, and you are allowed to apply multiple times. If you’d like to know more you’re welcome to message me about it. Good luck with your daughter’s applications!
@SandyScrubs I will pass that on to my nursing major friends, thanks!!
My son is interested in UNCW, he wants to major in Business. Can you tell me what the class sizes are for both business classes and other classes (humanities, general sciences - all the extra classes you need to take to fulfill degree requirements). I don’t know how well he would do in a large auditorium with 200 students. Do they have that at UNCW?
@sbgal2011 hey!! Class sizes for all gen Ed and major prereq courses often vary by professor and time. Yes, classes have 200 students in auditoriums here; I was almost in one this semester myself until I got to switch into the smaller class that was earlier. It all depends on when you register and what type of professor you want - do your research on RMP and you should be good if you’re able to register on time.
Thanks for your response! What is RMP?
