McGill Desautels is #2.

Hey tomofboston, thanks to replying to my question. I’ve read your other threads and I understand that you are a Desautels grad. I know that Desautels has a great MBA program, but from what I’ve heard, Queen’s Commerce and the Richard Ivey school of business have much better reputations for their undergraduate business programs. Is this true/how is an undergraduate business degree from Mcgill fare against other Canadian business schools. Thanks a lot.

Hi All,

I read that there are 24 credits required for AP courses if a US student wants to start in U1 (second year of the four years of study) of Desautels Management.

My question is: Is there a requirement to have these AP courses in specific subjects?

Thanks,
Vinsim

Vinsim,
Nope. I started U1 here with more than 24 credits through AP, and I took 11 APs across many different disciplines. It does not matter which APs you take. That being said, I would highly advise taking AP Macro Econ and Micro Econ, as well as AP stats. They’ll help you a bunch when you get here.

Sincerely,
Current 1st year U1 student at Desautels from US

Hi Hockeygoalie25,

Thanks for your reply. It was very helpful.

A few more questions:

1) If one starts in U1, then is it true that one completes BCom in 3 years?

2) Is the privilege to start in year 2 automatically granted based on APs.

3) Assuming no AP Micro or Macro Econ (but pretty much all other APs), does it impact entry into HIM program in year 3?

4) How many seats are there in the HIM program (and how many apply)

5) What are the cut-offs for US students? Are these based collectively on SAT, ACT, firsttime/superscore, GPA (Unweighted/Weighted), AP? or is it simply SAT?

6) I was surprised so see that Major Scholarships are based solely on unweighted GPAs. I was shocked as this reveals a lack of appreciation of AP courses. Any input into this?

7) Is the management program only two years long (i.e year 3 and 4)?

Thanks
Vinsim

Too many people get caught up with the U0/U1 thing. Being in U1 doesn’t guarantee graduation in 3 years and likewise, being in U0 doesn’t guarantee you will only graduate in 4. The thing you should look at are the number of credits, not your level. You can be in U1 and have 100+ credits to take. Are you going to be graduating in 3 years? Unlikely. The only guys that come in as U1 who are guaranteed to graduate in 3 years (assuming they don’t screw up and follow the schedule correctly) are CEGEP students who come in with advanced standing of 30 credits.

Refer to 1.

There are about 10 spots, maybe less in the HIM program every year and demand heavily…read…heavily outstrips supply so you need to be competitive.

Not 100% for US students but to give you an idea…the cut-off for Canadian students from other provinces is around a 93-94% average.

McGill is not an American institution so I’m not sure why its shocking. McGill doesn’t even look at your extra-curriculars when considering you for admission.

The management program (from the management core classes onwards) is 3 years but if you don’t have the required pre-reqs like cal and algebra, you might take longer.

Cheers

Hi EdDalton,

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.

I understand one communicates an interest in HIM program/ major in year 1. if I have 12 APs and allowed to start directly in year 1, how would my competitiveness for HIM be determined? (Note: My school doesn’t offer AP Micro/Macro Economics). The online application didn’t have choice of majors, it only allows one to select BCom.

“Major Scholarships are based solely on unweighted GPAs.” A bit shocking because McGill takes in a lot of US students and clearly, someone who takes a higher difficulty/ college level course is more deserving of Scholarship than someone who took the watered down version of the same course. Maybe I am missing something.

Thanks
VinSim

You apply for HIM in the winter semester of your U1 year. Therefore, your competitiveness for HIM is determined solely by your first year first semester grades (although i’m not 100% sure if they look at your past grades but i’m quite sure they do not). If you come into Desautels, your final grade will be curved relative to your peers (the average has to fall roughly into a B) so you will need to be extraordinarily outstanding to get a GPA of 4.0 at the end of your first semester. But then again, everyone gets super demoralized after the midterm because classes like financial accounting will give you a hard reality check with averages in the mid 50s.

For HIM, there are a set of core pre-reqs that you will have to complete before entering the program in your U2 year if selected but you can get those classes out of the way in your U1 year no problem.

Thanks EdDalton. Appreciate your help.

Vinsim,

Please keep in mind…is is VERY hard to get into HIM. My advice would be to have a backup plan. I am currently planning to apply for HIM, but I am cool with a finance major if I don’t get it. HIM is unbelievably hard to get into. First you have to get through the first round of cuts, where they make sure you have a stellar GPA. If you don’t have that, you can kiss it goodbye. Then you have to get through the interview process, and pitch a stock really well. They will be able to tell if you truly love finance or not, and if you do, you might have a shot. And you need to know your stuff cold. Keep in mind, there are a ton of other people applying as well. You have to truly be the best of the best to get in.

Hi Hockeygoalie25,

Wish you the best for your forthcoming HIM-alaya challenge. (btw the word HIM in ancient language Sanskrit literally means ice).

Personally, I would be content with Finance major too. Heard HIM students are found sleeping on their desks in the morning in front of their monitors! I love my sleep too much.

On another front, can you please take a moment to chance me for direct entry into U1?

12 AP (6 with a 5, rest a 4)

2320 SAT (first go)

36 ACT (first go)

800 Math, 800 Bio SAT2

Unweighted GPA 4.6

Weighted GPA 3.9

No Economics offered at my school.

Do you think I can score any major scholarships? I am Canadian studying in US.

Also, is the finance program comparable to Queens, Ivy’s or even Wharton’s (I know this might turn out to be a longer discussion). But are you totally content with your McGill choice?

What are the typical class sizes in U1?

Thanks
Vinsim

Is NEW NEW NEW Rez (La Citadelle) a great place to live? How’s the price?
