5 years ago (woah!) I was posting like mad on CC, anxious and stressed out about college decisions. I graduated from Harvard last year (class of '11) and am now traveling the world and freelancing.

I was involved with The Crimson, the Culinary Society, and a few other organizations on campus, lived in Straus freshman year, Quincy House, and did Dorm Crew as a pre-orientation program. I was an anthropology major who took some computer science classes senior year.

Feel free to ask questions about student life, advising, extracurriculars, etc. Congratulations!!

Thank you for providing an opportunity to get questions answered!

I am interested in concentrating in economics, but I am wondering how math-centered it is? Is it heavily theoretical or is it more applications based-math?

Also, what are you regrets or things you wished you did at Harvard?

Since I didn’t concentrate in Econ, I can’t answer that question for you. As far as request or things I wished I had did… I do wish now that I’d taken advantage of Harvard’s study abroad financial aid (which there is a lot of, in the form of the Rockefeller grants and other grants) rather than having the “I have to do an internship this summer” mindset.

I ended up organizing my own internship in China, and my own “funding” (my savings, parents, and the small internship stipend), but in retrospect, should have also considered taking classes abroad. I was very career focused, and didn’t have to be.

So my main advice is not to get too hung up on “what you have to do” - because this is just an illusion. You’ll definitely find that people at Harvard have extremely strong conceptions of “have to do” to the point of tunnel vision. And take advantage of abundant funding for summer and travel opportunities!

Thanks for making yourself available to answer questions!! Any and all answers will be appreciated!!!
How creative/inventive is the culture there overall? Do you know how it compares to MIT?
Did you get to know a lot of your class?
Do you still keep in touch with them?
Hows the alumni network, could you contact an unknown alumni for a place to stay?
how was your internship in china?
How competitive was it there? Do you think the rank system affects that at all?
How is it freelancing?
I wanna be silicon valley type entrepreneurs would you suggest traveling abroad to open your mind, experieences, etc??
Btw, when you were at harvard. Did your professors or yourself say/think think that someone “is the next (insert Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, President, etc.)?”
