Thank you!

Would you also happen to know what the difference between the Secondary School Report, the Mid-Year School Report, and the Final Report is? I can understand Mid-Year and Final, but I’m not sure how the Secondary school report comes into all this.

Secondary School report is everything as of the date you send your application.
midyear is as of the end of the first semester
final report is as of graduation

Oh I see… so as we finish the school year in November (I have already received my mid-year report, in May), and will therefore receive our “graduation” report on November (as that would be our Final school report), do I send it in lieu of my Secondary School report?

^Yes. You would send the Final Report with your equivalent of a final transcript. (The Secondary School Report would have been sent at the time of your original application, and you wouldn’t have to send it again since the Mid-year Report and Final Report serve as updates to the Secondary School Report.) Is your school guidance counselor familiar with the Common Application, of which all these reports are parts? There might be different deadlines and rules for international applicants, so be sure to investigate through the Common Application website.

Yeah, deadlines are the same.

When I apply, I will already have received my Mid-Year report and possibly the end-of-year (final) report too. Just to clarify, does that mean I send the JUST the secondary school report supplement (do I even need to attach my mid-year report then?)?

And when you say “updates”, does that mean I can send everything in the Common App bar my reports in one go (say in October), and then send my final report (say it comes Oct 15) separately?

Thanks,
Kiwikid

Applicannot:

D was in Wilbur and she says the kitchenette had pots and pans, measuring cups, baking sheets but no mixing bowls. She says the quality of the items were less than garage sale. She is bringing her own for next year.

Kiwikid, the school year there in NZ is on a sufficiently different schedule than here that you should probably direct these questions to the Common Application people at their website for definitive answers as to what forms you should send, and when. They are usually prompt in responding.

Do AP credits also fulfill breadth requirements? For example, will a 5 on Calculus BC fulfill DBMath?

@Omega: AP credits don’t fulfill breadth requirements. You can use them but have to take something else while at Stanford to fulfill all of your GERs (w/ the exception of the language requirement).
@Applicannot: I concur with emgamac. If you’re in a freshman dorm don’t count on nice kitchenware or kitchenware at all. In my frosh dorm (in Stern) the kitchenware was eh as was the kitchenette. Our RF was sometimes kind enough to let us borrow her pots/pans (and occasionally even her kitchen in exchange for some conversation) if we needed to cook something. Nicer dorms and houses have better and better equipped kitchenettes, naturally. If this is an issue, bring some with you or once you get there lobby for dorm funds to buy some for the dorm.

My next question is about the odd start and end dates for the school year. How do you get anything accomplished? For example, I’d like to sublet an apartment, but in 2011 the school year doesn’t start until September 26th - well over a month after the academic eyar begins in the cities I was looking at. I was also looking at programs like Breakthrough Collaborative and Middlebury’s language academies, but they all begin before finals end. How do you handle this schedule?

What do you guys do for food during breaks? I’m not flying home for Thanksgiving and may or may nothave the money to do something over spring break. I have a very limited budget.

Do any of you eat breakfast? I eat all three meals per day (actually five) and the meal dollars on the 14 meal plan are woefully inadequate - barely $1 a day. Although I will certainly get tired of dorm food, if I am going to have to fund a huge portion of my own food expenses anyways, does it make more sense to get the 19 meal plan? What do you guys suggest / what worked for you?

The internships I’m interested in are fine with me starting late / ending late, so I can’t comment much on your first question.

I was never on campus for breaks, but I remember that some dining halls stayed open (only 1 or 2 though). I also remember some of my friends would get together and cook meals for each other during breaks.

I ate breakfast every day on campus so I used the 19 plan all year. I need breakfast to function…idk how everyone else got by without it. However, because some days for lunch or dinner I would get food elsewhere, I would always have extra meals at the end of the week. It was fine for me though, because I never had to worry about if I had enough meals or not and I could always get breakfast.

llpitch, I’m glad there’s someone else in the world who has to eat breakfast. I think I will go ahead and get the 19, then be frugal with meals elsewhere whenever I decide they are appropriate. I will see if I can find any dining halls that are open.

Are there any rules against guests in the dorms? As long as my roommate obliges, I’d like to unofficial host a high school senior friend of mine. Is that an issue with the authorities that be?

applicannot, are you interested in Breakthrough Collaborative? I’m doing an internship at Breakthrough at now and would be happy to answer any questions that you might have.

I got the 19 meal plan and towards the end, I ended up with about 5 extra meals each week. Meal plan dollars come in handy and you can get your food at the Axe & Palm and Subway, so I think I might end up switching to the 14 meal plan instead (and yes, I do eat breakfast as well).

As for unofficial guests, it depends on your roommate but the policy for hosting prospective students is generally pretty lax. Just be sure to check in with your RA and your roommate so that they know, especially if your guest is staying overnight. I unofficially hosted a college friend of mine for two nights and nothing calamitous happened. :)

How bad, difficult, or grade-affecting is it to miss class? I don’t mean to be thinking about cutting class so early, but I had some commitments that apparently won’t work with Stanford’s calendar. I’m talking leaving school maybe 2 or 3 days before fall and spring breaks. If someone will come after me with an ax if I do that then I suppose I can cancel, but if it’s not going to kill me then I’d like to follow through.

skyraptor, I don’t have any specific questions but will remember you for when I do. I am definitely looking into Breakthrough Collaborative and am thinking it would be a great option after my freshman year.

How much did it cost you, in meals that were not dining hall meals? That is, how much did you end up spending (maybe per week or month, or quarter if you can only estimate that) on the meals you didn’t eat in the dining hall? I was definitely hoping to spend less than $100 a month on food and entertainment.

What was your GPA, SATs, ECs?

Is there like, a Bed, Bath and Beyond or a Target nearby so that I can order dorm necessities online and pick them up on location? I’m coming from NY so I’d like to minimize how much luggage I have with me while flying. Also, when do freshman dorm assignments become available? I’m wondering if it would be smart to ship a lot of my belongings prior to NSO so that by the time I arrive, I can have my packages waiting for me. Suggestions?

Yes, there is a Bed Bath and Beyond nearby in Mountain View. You can order a package of dorm necessities online and they will have everything ready for pickup when you arrive. I’m pretty sure it said in the Approaching Stanford materials that you can’t ship stuff in advance of your arrival, so I guess we should plan to have packages sent right after dorm move-in. Dorm assignments will be sent via email on August 9th, according to the website.

Thanks zenkoan!

@kneesandtoes: the days before breaks are finals days. Some professors will not make arrangements and u will take a 0 for the final and probably a fail the class but some professors will make arrangements with you to take from another location at the same time from another location or may have a final paper or something like that. I would highly recommend not missing those days if possible (if it’s like a vacation or something).

Does anyone know what kind of calculator will be needed for chem/stat/calc classes? I have an 84 plus silver if that will be good enough.
