What cell phone provider is best on campus?

I’ve heard AT&T will work, but I currently have T-Mobile. Is that sufficient?

You can start by looking through the Stanford Bulletin on the registrar’s website. Next year’s isn’t out yet, but the courses will stay more or less the same from year to year, especially freshman-level courses. Courserank is also a good tool, or so I’m told; I’ve never used it personally. Once you arrive for NSO, you’ll have an academic advisor who can help you pick courses and explain requirements. If you already have some idea what your major will be (and indicate it on the Approaching Stanford paperwork), they’ll usually assign you a faculty member in your department.

If you’re completely at a loss–don’t know your major, no clue what you’re interested in–look for courses that satisfy GER’s. You have to do them anyway, so you might as well do them now, and maybe a subject will catch your interest along the way.

What are the parties like?
How many of your friends are dating somebody?
When do you have to declare your major?
Is it better to apply w/ a declared major instead of undecided?
Can you change your major?

Thanks :)

To Shazami: I quite honestly know zero about building computer systems and bikes lol. Just get whatever you want as long as they fulfill your requirements.
A couple of my friends have T-Mobile and they don’t get reception in certain areas. I think Verizon is fine. Most people have iPhones and use AT&T though.

haha thanks

I second ‘What are the parties like?’

Haha, so I’m just randomly popping into this convo because I have to say that T-Mobile is the WORST on Stanford campus (I am an undergrad). I have T-Mobile and have suffered dropped calls and low reception many (even most) places on campus, which is funny because once you leave campus it’s fine. I have a Blackberry with WiFi though, so I can use the WiFi to call and text (it helps immensely), but if you have the choice, go with AT&T or Verizon or anything non T-Mobile. But if you don’t have the choice, T-Mobile is survivable with patience :)

Oh, and my two cents:

Oh and in reference to the Stern v. Wilbur thing earlier… Much of Stern was recently redone, so it’s A LOT nicer inside than much of Wilbur, especially the bathrooms. At least this was the case when I lived there (unless they’re redoing/redid Wilbur too). Stern is not as pretty outside though; I think Stern is the ugliest complex on campus next to Meyer Library. And I liked the small tables, proximity to Late Nite and never found it hard to socialize in the hallways. Stern Dining isn’t the best, but it’s not bad at all either and you can eat at whatever dining hall you want, so it’s no big deal. They tend to have good lunches and mediocre dinners. Stern is however in a slightly better location than Wilbur (slightly closer to the libraries and center campus, etc). Either way, you can’t choose where you live as a frosh and there’s not really much difference between the two so its no big deal. They’re really pretty similar, and both are fine places to live. I lived in Stern freshman year and had a great time - the people, not the buildings, make the place.

Hey you guys! Sorry if this question has been answered already. I’m really interested in doing student council my freshmen year, and I was wondering if anyone could like explain the process for freshmen who are interested in representing the freshmen class? like when elections are held? a simple overview of the whole procession etc?? thanks (M_M)

The party scene is pretty much what has already been described here. There are a lot of smaller parties based on themed houses on the row and also a lot of all campus frat parties (though these sometimes come with sketchy non-undergrads trying to crash --though actually, if you think about it, there are plenty of sketchy undergrads at these anyways). All parties are supposed to be shut down by 1 AM.

if you are in a club, depending on the club there will be parties hosted by them, and if you are in a frat/sorority there are a lot of mixers/smaller parties basically every week, though these are exclusive. If you are in a themed dorm, co-op, or frat/sorority you will have a special dinner every quarter, where there’s a chef invited/dressing up/partying.

in response to bcrouc: frosh council is kind of a joke.you get elected within your dorm: one guy, one girl. one plus is you do get to know a lot of people around campus, but people ended up not even going to their frosh council meetings at the end of the school year because they didn’t really do anything.

Hello everyone. Random question. Are we personally supposed to submit final transcripts to Montag Hall? Aren’t our counselors in charge of directly sending it there?

Did anyone receive the three books yet? I thought they were supposed to be mailed out last week.

i didnt get any of the things that were sent on june 25
i assume it just takes longer when they are mailing 1670 of them

ExcitedG, your guidance counselor should have sent the Common Application Final Report, with your final transcript attached, to Stanford. It’s due by July 1st. You might want to contact your counselor to make sure it has been sent.

No summer reading or parents’ packet received here yet either. Maybe later this week?

admissions actually said that they dont need the Common App Final Report. Just a transcript is sufficient, but they will keep the final report on file if u send it

NJDS, where did they say that? I must have missed it. Oh well, they got my Final Report whether they wanted it or not. : )

i called them to say my final report might have some missing pieces bc my guidance counselor just retired, and they said they dont really look at them anyway. they just need our final transcript, so thats all that i sent

i always thought they needed the full thing, but i guess it doesnt really matter to them at this point

There’s an issue on Facebook about the Common App. Apparently it HAS to be mailed, not sent through the Common App. I sent mine through the Common App but it was never “downloaded.”

how much privacy do you have in dorms?

also, what exactly are the requirements? approaching stanford was confusing.
what math classes do freshmen have to take/usually take?

your dorm privacy depends a lot on whether you are in a room with 2 people or a 2 bedroom type thing with 4 people (i.e. in the 4-class dorms in Roble).
The single room with 2 roommates: you and that person have 1 room, just 1 door to get in. your closet is all the privacy you get from that person.
The 2 bedroom things: 1 door to get into the center room (with the desks and chairs) and another door to get into each of the bedrooms. you have a little more privacy from the other 2 people (suitemates?) but not from your 1 physical roommate

freshman usually take any of these series:
math 19-20-21
math 41-42
math 51-52

some people take 19-20-21
some take 41-42
some take 41-42-51
some take 51-52 or just 51 (with a 4-5 on BC Calc or 5 on AB Calc AP tests)
some take 42-51 or 42-51-52 or just 42 (with a 3 on BC Calc or 4 on AB Calc AP tests)

personally, im probably just taking 51 because I got a 5 on BC Calc, and I only need 1 more quarter for premed reqs. im considering taking 42 and 51 because i’m not too comfortable with the material from math 42 (BC Calc) and I’d just forfeit the extra 5 AP credits…

what do mean by “the requirements”?
