Ask a UMass Student

For summer housing I would recommend getting a spot off campus that would be cheaper. But if you really want to be on campus they would place you in one of the 12 month buildings in sylvan. Contact umass residential life.

If break housing is requested then yes they can be placed in break housing but there are not any freshman buildings that have break housing so the student wouldn’t be with freshman. If they do not request break housing they would be placed with freshman.

Can anyone comment on the Operations and Information Management major? I’ve been accepted for the fall 2013 semester as a freshman and I am trying to learn more about this major. It seems different colleges offer the same major but the core classes at each are diferent. Thanks.

Hello,

I have a friend whos two roomates smoke weed in the room and is growing something (which is probably weed). What can he do about this?

His told them to stop but they ignore him.

Thanks

Many kids smoke weed, it’s part of life. Don’t make a huge issue out of this

Granted smoking weed seems to be very apparent on college campuses but a student who does not wish to participate in this activity should not have to share a room with these students. I would encourage his friend to talk with his RA. From personal experience, I know that is usually useless but perhaps the RA can help in speeding up the process for finding a different living situation. Nobody should have to live in a dorm room where the other roommates are making him/her uncomfortable- especially where the activity is doing something illegal. Although smoking weed is very common, technically it is still illegal.

Agree with last poster–start with RA, then move up the chain of command. There must be someone at Res Life who handles such things. One should not have to be subjected to something like this if they choose not to do so.

Many have been accepted my D is in the same boat Nowadays GPA is important as sat/act and many schools take that seriously along with volunteering and community service.in the past many cheats with high sats and no xtras have been denied.the schools re very dilligent now they they have been in the past…Hang in there and don’t give up

RAs don’t have the power to move people in housing (I’m an RA). If they feels uncomfortable about the situation have them speak to his RD. the name/email of the RD can be found online on the umass housing website. The RD has more power to actually make something happen

Are the fraternities on campus well respected? If so which ones? Also are the houses there nice or just rundown houses?

The frat houses I’ve driven by look one step above Animal House. One had a sign during freshman move in to “deposit your daughters here”. Classy.

rlouisne or MADad… son was accepted into honors program so potentially he would be in new dorms. Do you know if date of enrollment deposit has any impact on his choice for placement into these dorms or is there room for all honors kids in these new units?

Also, is there any talk of tripling these units or are they all definitely doubles?

Thanks!

What I’ve heard about the ComColl dorm is that freshman will be in doubles, and upperclassmen in suites. I think they’d like as many honors kids in the new dorms as possible, but not all may choose to do so (science/eng majors may still like to be in Northeast, for example).

Science and engineering honors RAPs, for example, may still be kept in Northeast/OHill, last I heard.

They will not be triples. Freshman dorms will be doubles while upperclassmen have suites and apartments.

As far as the deposit doesn’t matter because the housing order is randomly done. So your child will be assigned a number in July. If he selects a roommate with a higher priority then he has a better chance. Not sure but if there is a RAP for the honors dorm sign up for it to get a guaranteed spot.

thank you both

To echo what rlouisne said, the # of slots for RAPs is limited, and you want to get online the day they open to grab a slot if that’s what you want.

If he attends it would be in the new dorms…can’t pass up brand new, A/C (I think), guaranteed double, and proximity to fields across street to kick the soccer ball around in.

To continue the housing discussion: Is the engineering RAP in Northeast? How are those dorms?

Right now the honors engineering RAP is in Northeast. That complex represents the oldest dorms on campus, built in the 1930’s. A little worn out, but looks like a New England college dorm ‘should’ look like (red brick, etc). Best thing about Northeast is the proximity to science, math, and engineering buildings–literally across the street or a couple of buildings down the street. Worcester dining commons is also next door.

The AC in the new honors dorm is a definite attraction–even western MA gets hot in September and May.

I was just going thru the mail and noticed a post card flyer from the honors college titled “Honors Residential Academic Programs (RAP)”. It says… Comm Honors first years students have the opportunity to join an honors RAP. These programs, located in the new Comm Col Res community…

Is there both an engineering RAP and an Honors Engineering RAP?
