I haven’t seen anything about an “Honors engineering” RAP just regular engineering RAP. Unless they added one for Fall 2013. the website still has 2012 info up.

To ask another question: on another CC thread there was talk of putting down multiple housing deposits, (which are generally refundable), not enrollment deposits, to hold your place while waiting for FA info and to make your final decision on which college to attend. From what has been said here about the lottery, etc., it doesn’t sound like this strategy would work for UMass. Correct?

There is definitely an honors engineering rap (along with 8 others) as it is listed on there comm college website. They must run both types of RAPs.

As far as other item see rlouisne post above (#94). Looks random with deposit dates not mattering like at other schools.

CnfusedMOMinMA- I hadn’t seen those post about putting down deposits on housing options. I just assumed that colleges would only accept housing deposits once you have selected the college that you plan to attend. I would think that was an administrative nightmare for colleges who have the policy that you can put deposits down for specific dorms.

My assumption with UMASS Amherst is that if you are selected for an honor’s college student, you automatically get into the honors dorm. I’m hoping that UMASS does not overbook the honors dorm so that the overflow would be placed in other dormitories. However, now I’m not so confident.

I don’t think freshman year will be any issue as they are allotting 600 beds for freshman honors which is typically more than the freshman honors enrollment (although they are supposed to up it from 485 to 600 with the incoming class). After that they have another 900 beds for upper class-men. So 1500 beds for 3000 or so honors kids.

What are the study abroad opportunities like?

Do you have any feel for the undergraduate research activity? Any inside insight into their science departments’ research? Biotechnology?

I’ve already done plenty of looking into this but I’m curious as to if there’s something someone who is living ther coudl tell me

Also I love working out, how is the campus gym?

I was wondering if someone who attends umass could rank the freshman dorms for me? As in which ones are the nicest, etc… thanks!

Is there mass transportation available to get to the local Target?

UMass and the Five College area have access to an extensive bus system both on and off campus. Much of it is free during the academic year. My son gets to Target, Northhampton and all points in between.

I think bus 43 goes to the Hampshire Mall Where Target is

[PVTA Schedules](<a href=“Error 404 PVTA”>PVTA Schedules)

Haven’t been on here in a while. Midterms were not a joke but to answer these questions.

The gym is brand new basically (opened in 09) and beautiful you should not have a problem.

Freshman dorms all matters on the experience you want. If you are in honors go with commonwealth. right on campus and next to the gym. If you are in the sciences go with northeast. If you are in art and humanities go with central. Orchard hill is going to be different next year since the honors raps are being moved so I can’t say. Southwest if you are a business, or social science major is the spot to be.

But if your asking for a specific dorm for freshman. Sycamore and oak in honors will be nice. Next will have to be vanmeter in central because it is a recently renovated freshman dorm

Hello…

I got accepted to Umass Amherst management programs and I am gonna go there!
I need advise about which dorm i should choose as a management student and i am not a party animal…
I wonder do the admission tell you that you are in honor programs as soon as they send the acceptance letter.

Thanks for you advices!! :)

rlousine…

Do you have any insight as to how the new CHC housing requests will work for upperclassmen? While my son would come in as a freshman and be guaranteed honors housing, what happens in sophomore year as there are only roughly 900 beds (1500-600 freshman) for the remaining 2400 or so CHC students? Does it go top down at that point so the sophomores could get the short straw?

Thanks

hey applied as a transfer student for sports management, in the Isenberg school of management. transferring from a school in Pennsylvania. i’m applying for fall 2013, so i’m applying to go there starting my second year of college. since the application process is in the middle of the year, 30 credits aren’t completed so i have to send my high school transcript as well as mid term grades.

My high school gpa was in the high 70’s, but my first two years were a primary reason for that. There was steady rises in my gpa over the four years of high school. I had a 3.93 in my first college semester, and I sent my midterms which was almost straight a’s.

I also have several great recommendation letters from college professors, many extra curricular’s,and a great college essay and personal circumstance essay which talks abut why my beginning years of high school were so difficult. I have also established several good relationships and connections with admissions officers there, as well as visiting and meeting with them.

Do you think I will be able to get into sports management at Umass Amherst, as a transferdespite my poor high school transcript?

Any response would be greatly appreciated

You find out if you got into honors when you are accepted. Keep your gpa up the first semester and you can get in later.

Getting into honors as an upperclassman is based on luck with your priority number. Seniors and juniors have priority for the apartments while sophomores have priority for the suites. In these sub categories students are randomly assigned priority numbers.

I actually found the powerpoint presentation given to current students (https://www.honors.umass.edu/sites/honors.umass.edu/files/u7/CHCRC_housing_info_for_students_web2.pdf) If I do the math correctly there are 167 - 4 person suites available to sophomores, enough to accomodate the freshman when they move up +. Junior/Senior year looks like the problem where they only have 49 - 4 person apartments (196 kids) + what remains from the sophomore suites not taken.

Thanks rlousine

^ Wow, those prices are 20%+ higher than the cost for a non-Honors dorm.

So in addition to paying $600/year extra in Honors College Fees, kids in the Honors College will now also pay an extra $1200/year for housing.

Is UMass requiring freshman CHC members to live in these new dorms?

It will be interesting to see if they can fill them.

How likely is it that I get my first choice dorm? I really want to live in central because of the kosher food, but also would feel comfortable with ohill. But, northeast and southwest are just no-goes for me. So, what are the odds that I do get central? Is it very popular?

Sign up for a RAP in your top priority area and it is guaranteed. Just be sure to register the first day you can sign up. Son loves OHill - did the politics today RAP, made great friends
