Ask away- it's UChicago Prospective Students Advisory Committee

Hello,
I requested an alumni interview a while back and never received contact from an alumni member.
An email from a member of the Alumni Schools Committee told me to email if I didn’t receive contact within 2 weeks, but I waited until 3 weeks because I had this notion that UChicago was having trouble with giving interviews to so many applicants this year.
Rest assured, I didn’t wait that one extra week because of lack of interest; I’ve been checking my phone and email just about every day :P

A few days ago, I submitted the email notifying that I hadn’t received contact and haven’t received a reply at all =/. Did I tick them off somehow or are they not reading any emails anymore?
Now I’m slightly paranoid about the possibility that there was miscommunication along the way.

Thanks in advance if you can give me an answer :D

agpyn3w- no worries on this one, re-contacting was definitely the way to go. Unfortunately, with the huge surge in applications this year, we do not have the ability to offer an alumni interview to everyone- while there is still a chance that you may be contacted, my best bet is that either the alumni interview spots have been taken in your area or we do not have an alumni interviewer where you live. Keep checking back, though! There’s still a chance you may be contacted, but, if not remember that alumni interviews are not required for admission, and so if you are unable to have one you will still be perfectly fine. I apologize that we/the Alumni Schools Committee did not notify you promptly.

Alright, I was aware of the application surge and suspected that might’ve had something to do with it.
Thank you very much for the quick reply; I appreciate it!

i love the university of chicago!!!

YAY! So do I :)

I just submitted the letter of evaluation on my proposed problems published from the editor of “School Science and Mathematics” journal. If the admissioners already read my file, will the letter be considered? I really hope this letter will be considered though since it reflects a different traits on my mathematical ability. Will the admissions have to send out the email about “application complete” before starting reading it? Or they just read it as soon as they can, even with not enough required information?I hope this won’t be the case.

on my wall is the poster that the university sent me a few months ago :)

Because my school’s first semester finishes late, my Midyear Report will not get to UChicago/be postmarked by the deadline. Will this be a problem in admissions? Also, my parents’ 2008 taxreturns will be postmarked February 1st, but won’t get to UChicago until later. Will that be okay?

ghjk- we always do our best to make sure all sent information is considered in a student’s file; it is likely that this letter will indeed be considered before your decision is made, no worries.

samedifference- you should contact your regional admissions counselor and a financial aid representative with these questions.

samedifference, our school system doesn’t send out mid-year reports til the third week of Feb. Just let your regional rep know that the school takes a while and when Chicago can expect them.

If we’ve already graduated from high school and hence don’t need to send a Mid-year report, how do we make this clear to Admissions so they’re not waiting for a non-existent document to arrive?

I recently had an alumni interview that allowed me to learn more about campus culture and resources. However, my conversation led into the interviewer’s major (AB Philosophy), which baffled me. For almost half of the interview, he extended his discussion on consequentialism, and because our interests ultimately did not match, he seemed to receive a bad impression of me. Could an unfavorable interview like mine throw an applicant into the reject pool?

Hi, I write a monthly book review column for my school newspaper and I sent in some samples to be reviewed with my application. Originally I had thought that all sorts of writing samples were welcome, and I thought that sending in some samples would be a good indicator of who I am and what I’m interested in. But looking back at the website, I noticed that it specifically said creative writing samples, and I’m not sure that book reviews count as “creative.” Was sending them in a mistake? Will they still be reviewed with my application?

Sorry, I did not mean to exclude other forms of writing samples by saying “creative”- those sorts of writing samples are definitely fine, and will be reviewed as supplemental material with your application.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do I find out who my regional officer is?

excellent detective work, captain obvious!!

hi UChicagoPSAC–

i signed up for a UChicago tracking account a few years ago, but, since then, my school decided to switch email servers…therefore, i don’t have any access to the previous email even though i need it to track my application and such. my question is how do i sign up for a new account when the only option on the website now is to select that i am entering in the fall of 2011??? i need access to my chicago application in order to request interviews &c.

i already emailed the office–no reply :frowning: yet!

thanks!! hope you can help me

@ wg- you should contact your regional counselor in this case, or, conversely, see if your school might be able to give you access to e-mails from your old account in some way? Definitely talk to your counselor, though.

@dgtmartins- we will know from your transcripts that you have already graduated, so don’t worry about the midyear report. If you get some sort of notification from us that you haven’t sent one in in error, contact your regional counselor to explain.

@smyrna- we use the alumni interviews to get to know about you, but also to try and share information about the school— some alums are better at this than others, and it looks like yours may not have gotten the point. Really, don’t worry about it. We’re not evaluating you based on your knowledge of philosophy- and since interviews are optional, they are in no way the deciding factor in any admissions decision.
