UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor! [NEW]

Hi everyone!

I’m Hannah, an Admissions Counselor and a member of the Outreach team in the admissions office, and a UChicago alumna. Sound familiar? UChicago Admissions is reviving our presence here on College Confidential, starting with this new thread! Grace (now our Deputy Director of Admissions!) did a great job answering questions on here in the past, but because we’ve introduced many new admissions policies and programs in recent years, I thought it’d be best to create a brand-new thread with all the most current information.

So with that being said, I’ll be on hand (along with a few other members of the team) to answer any questions you might have about UChicago and the opportunities we offer.

First, a few ground rules: Although CC can be a good way to have general questions answered, your best source of information in the application cycle is and still will be your regional admissions counselor and our website, collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu. You can find out who your regional counselor is by looking at the “Contact Us” portion of our website, which should be updated with our new territories soon; if you’re from my neighborhood (Virginia and West Virginia) I’d love to hear from you, but would appreciate if you’d contact me at the address listed on that page. Further, I’ll be checking this account frequently but not constantly, so if you have an urgent question please go ahead and defer to your regional counselor or our general office contact line listed on that page.

Additionally, although I hope this goes without saying, I am not able to “chance” you or to offer you any information about your likelihood of admission or your application status. I’m also not able to offer information about specific financial aid decisions or individual admissions decisions. Again, if you have specific questions about your application, please reach out to your regional counselor – they will be more than happy to assist you!

If you’d like to get in direct contact with a current student, feel free to do so by e-mailing askastudent@uchicago.edu. You can also contact our admissions office with questions by sending an email to collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu.

Those of us on the Outreach team are so excited to be back on College Confidential and are happy to answer your questions. Looking forward to speaking with you all!

Best,

Hannah Skaran

Hi Hannah,

Our daughter has been contacted by your institution numerous times in the past months (we have also received correspondence addressed to her parents). Recently, she received an unsolicited notice that you would extend the deadline for her application. But we did some research, and found that less than 1% of applicants in the regular admission pool were accepted. Since she does not have any ‘hooks’ we assume the chances are even lower than that. We do not feel that she has any realistic chance of being admitted.

Hi minimickey! First, please note that we do not release any official admit rates for individual rounds - any sources claiming to do so are unofficial, and do not originate from our office. The number of students admitted in a particular round is going to vary from year to year depending on the size and overall quality of that pool.

Our application process is competitive, but we do use a holistic approach to reviewing applications. This means that no single part of an application will guarantee any admissions result. Rather, every piece of an application is reviewed in the context of the application as a whole. That being said, if your daughter is no longer interested in applying, or would not like to receive any more emails, please contact our office at collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu and we would be happy to assist you. Best, Hannah

Hi @UChicago!

I have a friend who is a Canadian citizen currently studying overseas. Given that UChicago is need-blind to Canadian citizens for Financial Aid, will she be eligible to apply for such aid at any time even if she did not indicate so on her original application?

Thanks!

Why not?

You may be thinking of deferred EA applicants:

https://www.chicagomaroon.com/article/2018/5/3/university-chicagos-acceptance-rate-plummets-7-2-c/

“The regular decision admit rate was 4 percent, and the admit rate for students who were deferred in the early round was just 0.5 percent, [Dean of Admissions James Nondorf] said.”

Hello, does UChicago consider legacy status? If yes, does it recommend applying in particular round (e.g. ED, EA, or ED2] for that status to be considered? Thank you.

Hi @UChicago ,

I’ve gone ahead and applied RD, but I just found out I have a close relative that attended UChicago. I’m a competitive applicant and wondering if there is any way to add this to my application.

Hello Hannah!

If the financial aid award isn’t enough for an ED applicant, will UChicago release the applicant from the ED commitment? Can UChicago postpone the reply date for the applicant?

Thank you!

Hi Hannah! It’s great that you’re doing this! I have a question for you. Is it possible after filing an ED2 application to switch to RD? And is it possible to switch from RD to ED2? Thanks!

Hi, I was wondering if UChicago tracks demonstrated interest?

Hi ryanebord54, the best way to add that information (or any additional information) to your application at this time would be to email your regional admissions counselor. You can find their information in the link at the top of this post! - Hannah

Hi gsdlover, I would recommend contacting our office directly for that information as it relates mostly to financial aid. Please let me know if you need help contacting us! - Hannah

Hi CollegeQs234, glad to be back on CC! If you would like to switch from EDII to RD or from RD to EDII, please email us at collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu as soon as possible and our office will be able to help you make that change. - Hannah

Hi emmm16,
We do not track demonstrated interest. This is to ensure a level playing field for all of our applicants, regardless of their ability to contact us, travel to campus, etc. That being said, you’re always welcome to come to campus for a tour (https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/visit/tours-visits), or attend an information session in your area (https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/visit/uchicago-visits-you) if you’d like to learn more about us or speak with an admissions counselor! - Hannah

@uchicago To tag someone in a post, you have to put the @ sign in front of their user name.

@Mwfan1921 Oh my, thank you for the tip! It’s been a while since I was on CC as a student myself, can you tell?
@ryanebord54 @gsdlover @CollegeQs234 and @emmm16 , replies to your questions are above!^

What might an EA deferral mean for a student taking a gap year, as their test scores, extracurriculars, and classes are essentially set in stone? .

EA deferral means virtually guaranteed rejection for an applicant who does not switch to EDII:

https://www.chicagomaroon.com/article/2018/5/3/university-chicagos-acceptance-rate-plummets-7-2-c

“the admit rate for students who were deferred in the early round was just 0.5 percent”

Today is the last date to switch from RD to EDII:

@TheVulcan

Yes, I know the numbers, but I meant what might a deferral mean for a Gap year student, especially one who has applied through Questbridge (has many RD applications) since it’s a pretty unique scenario compared to a regular deferral through regular EA applications. This makes me wonder if it was a matter of interest/yield for the school.
