Ask me anything transfer/career/success related

i'm sorry, i forgot to mention that my GPA was only based of 36 units (8 classes) at the time i applied for transfer. does that affect my chances anyhow?

csteep, can you help me out and chance me?
i go to SMC and am planning on transferring to UCI or UCSB as a junior in fall 2010 (3 years total at SMC).. my gpa is 3.27 with 1 repeat (i failed stats the first time but got a C the 2nd time) and 1 W.. i have a few EC's (nothing special).. i am majoring in sociology..i will have completed IGETC and all the prerequisites for both schools prior to transfer.. so... how are my chances for both schools and can you also give me a minimum gpa score that has a solid chance at those schools?
also 1 more thing.. i am korean, will the schools look down on the fact that i got 10 units worth of A's from taking Korean 1 and 2?
thanks in advanced

kim^ u couldnt sing a transfer agreement to UCI?

i guess not.. i didn't know much about that stuff til recently

What are my chances?

History at UC Berkeley

3/4 of the pre-requisites done, I wasn't interested in the other pre-requisite offered. I have taken a total of five history courses though, all UC-transferable.

3.88 overall GPA, 3.85 UC-transferable GPA

Good ECs, average essays

I didn't finish IGETC because I'm missing foreign language. :( But I am taking the AP Exam for Spanish in a few weeks.

"By the end of the spring term preceding fall enrollment at Berkeley,
you must complete either:

1) The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Foreign Language, and
Quantitative Reasoning; OR
2) IGETC "

Thanks.

CSteep, thanks for doing this! Makes a bunch of anxious transfers very happy... I am wondering what your thoughts are in terms of housing for transfers, specifically at Berkeley. Should transfers live on campus? Off campus? Is it awkward living in dorms when most people have already moved off campus by Junior year? If you do decide to live off campus, is it harder to make friends?

omg plz dont make this a chances thread

im gonna ask the question everybody wants to hear
how much money do u make and what car do u drive :P

Okay... the "chance me's" are hijacking this thread with their insecurity, no offense... Chancing yourself does nothing besides make you anxious... if you insist on knowing I would go into the college confidential history, look up the May 2008 time-frame and see what students who were actually accepted had as far as stats go... nothing works better than true comparable analysis.

Second, look at your target school's published transfer stats.. Last I checked 3.0 was enough to safely get into the lower tier UC's for non-impacted majors.

From here out I'm going to answer those questions that will benefit the broadest reader base... if you have a personal question shoot me an email.

A: There are dorms set aside for transfers.. that may be your best bet for meeting people and getting some of the dorm experience if you don't know anybody at Cal. If on the other hand you know people at the school you are transferring to I would recommend rooming with them... that way you can meet some of their friends, they will know about parties on campus etc.. can take you along, give you an opportunity to meet people. Do not under any circumstance live way the hell far away from campus alone, it will suck.

Another idea, if you are the sorta free spirited, hippy type there are co-ops you can join... basically big houses with free loving, pot smoking, partying types. If you want more structure you could seek out a fraternity/sorority. You really have to think about waht kind of person you are and what kind of people you want to meet/be around... there's room for all types in Berkeley. Even living on the North side of campus is hugely different from living on the South side of campus, likewise the East and West sides have their own vibe...

If you have follow up about the kind of feel you are looking for or the kind of people you want to meet I can suggest some arrangements that may work for you.

I make enough to say I'm very comfortable...

is physics/astrophysics at Berkeley considered an impacted major?

Business must be super slow at your firm considering you have the time to devote to this discussion + other services you advertise. Such a gloom economy. It's great that your sharing your experience though.

csteep,

probably a shot in the dark but any chance that your firm is looking for a summer intern / part time employee??

I'm a cal student, but more importantly an awesome CC'er!

also another legit question I guess:

I transferred to Cal this semester as an Econ major. What are the best ways for me to secure employment post graduation? internships and the like?

I also applied to Cal as an econ major for transfer.

csteep, I'm guessing you got into HAAS? Or were you an econ major?
Do you think it would be hard to find a job with an Econ degree from berkeley, assuming good gpa? A lot of people are telling me Econ degrees are useless now-a-days.

Also, do you know if its possible for me to transfer in as Econ major and after a year try to get into HAAS? And if I cant, is it possible to double major in Econ and something else?

Career Center - What Can I Do With a Major In...?

^^not so useless.

if you got in as econ they're not gonna let you double with haas but you could double with other majors in L&S. Math would be a good complement with econ.

Is there a college dating scene or is everyone busy being buried in books? Random note, I used to have a friend who wouldn't want to date me because I didn't go to CAL, but the person was willing to date a complete stranger from CAL and party and what not... I hope there's no stigma against transfers, social wise and academic wise is there? I mean we worked hard to get here? No one gives any flack to the athletes who get an even earlier registration then people with dozens of ap scores and worked hard in high school

What methods did you use to pay for tuition and other expenses and what is recommended? Borrowing from parents, financial aid, or loans?

what chance do i have of getting into berkeley? I'm an art history major with a 4.0 pre-req gpa and a 3.5 overall GPA.
