Ask Questions about Andover

@DocScratch Thanks! I’m also a serious musician… (played nearly 11 years now) Is there enough time to fit in a weekly private lesson/practice daily? I’m concerned that it would get in the way of schoolwork… Thanks for the answers! It’s totally understandable if you have hasty replies ;)

@violinjaa: Many students are taking music private lessons while at school, so that’s no problem. And you can certainly find time to practice every day if you want to. You may have a locker in the music building so you don’t have to carry your instruments back and forth all the time. However, the music building is relatively remote on campus, so depending on where you travel from, it could take you up to 10 min to walk there, which can be a pain especially in bad weather. As for the workload, it really varies by individuals. I’d say if you are serious about music, which means you’d be in all the school orchestra practices, performances and trips plus private lessons etc., you might not be able to do a time consuming sports. You’d run the risk of stretching yourself too thin.

Can former classmates/schoolmates of accepted applicants be given a recommendation from that student.

Can someone who knows a lot about andover pm me?
I am a prospective applicant for the next school year, and I have a couple questions about the application.
Thanks!!!

Despite being an ideal, utopianized figure in people’s minds, Andover, and every other school for that matter, is still a high school with high schoolers. There are going to be incidents drug related, or otherwise nefarious. It doesn’t mean that everyone does it, it’s just that a very small minority of stupid kids are.

If people steer clear of that group, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. Just don’t do it yourself.

^^I agree.

Hey! I got in as a new lower. Do you know anything about how new lowers are placed in dorms? Oh and which girl’s dorms did you think were the best? Am I authorized to request a certain dorm or cluster? Thanks  I’m super excited!

@kikadia99 It wouldn’t hurt to call the admission office at PA and ask to be put in touch with a current new lower. My guess is they would hook you up! :)

@stargirl3‌ thanks! I’ll do just that

I am bumping this thread in case more people have questions about Andover.

I have a question that won’t be answered anywhere. Would Andover accept a low 80’s/high 70’s percentile SSAT?

According to their website, under admissions, they say there is no set percentile for acceptance. However, they also state that the average student has managed to maintain an average of “A” at their previous school and their SSAT percentile is on average 93. So if you can let your extra circulars shine through and stand out in some way, you have a chance. :)

edited to fix the smiley lol .

Thanks a lot. :">

@skieurope‌ Move thread?

@andover98: How do you think Andover has changed you/improved your life?

On average, how much work do you receive per class? And how many tests do you have per week?

This thread already exists; I will merge the two.

Hi all,
I’m currently a two year sophomore boarder at Andover and I figured I’d open myself up to questions because I’m sure there are lots of them out there. Please don’t ask me "what are my chances " as I’m not an admissions officer. I just want to answer any questions there might be about this place. I’ll do my best to answer them all. Good luck to all those applying here!

How is the life at Andover? Is it “fun” or is it stressful? @andover98

Hello! I am considering Andover and I can’t understand how you plan your class schedule. Thank you in advance

@Whatshername007: This is a question you should have asked the admissions office or your specific representative AO or your interviewer before the deadline/application ended. I see that in December you asked a similar question. Were you able to receive a good answer?

You say that you are considering Andover. Does this mean that you are applying next year or have you already applied?

If you’re applying next year, contact the admissions office (maybe in March, they probably won’t reply now because they’re busy looking at applications). Contact info is here: http://www.andover.edu/Admission/Pages/Contact-Us.aspx. Either call them or email one of the personal application advisors listed at the bottom.

If you have already applied and currently are waiting for admissions decisions in three weeks:
In your post back in December, someone gave you this link to look at: http://www.andover.edu/Academics/Documents/COS2014-2015.pdf. Your answer is on page 5: “Planning a Program of Study at Andover.” Additionally, Andover mentions on their website (in the Academics section): “Throughout their time at PA, students meet with faculty advisors to discuss course selection.” Here is a sample daily class schedule: http://www.andover.edu/Academics/ProgramInfo/Pages/DailyClassSchedule.aspx.

I hope this helped.
