Did you participate in Summer Start or did you know anyone who did?

I’ve been invited and I’m wondering if it’s worth leaving my gap year abroad two weeks early to attend it. You get 8 credits…

Leftie17: It depends on what you want. If you love hall-style, I would pick one of TOTA (Tucker, Owen, Turlington, or Alexander). Tucker and Owen are FYC dorms so are historically known as party dorms; as an engineer it may not suit what you want. There are other hall-styles (Gold and Syme come to mind) but they are kind of ****ty locations on campus.

If you value location the most, the Tri-Towers (Metcalf, Bowen, and Carroll) will be the best. They are basically in the middle of campus and some classes will be less than a 5 minute walk. These are popular freshman dorms.

If you want the best rooms, I would say Bragaw (though I haven’t seen the rooms in Avent Ferry or Wood). Bragaw is hard to get into as a freshman, but the location is good and the furniture/size of rooms is great.

Living Learning Villages (LLV) are not required, but they are a good way to get involved if you feel strongly about one of the issues. You can read more about them here ([Living and Learning Villages](http://ncsu.edu/housing/villages/index.php)).

ephseagles: I’m not going to sugarcoat it. We are fairly difficult to get into OOS and they look mainly at your “big stats” (GPA, SAT scores, and rigor of classes). I’m sure that extra-curriculars, leadership, and having a job may put you in if they’re on the fence, but I can’t be sure. What major are you applying for?

I can’t really chance you because I know as much as admissions as you do and no one here from in-state or out-of-state talks about their HS GPA or how they got in. Everyone is kind of on equal footing so I don’t know the caliber of students that come in from OOS. That said, your UW GPA is strong.

Unless you told them somehow that your grades dropped and then you showed improvement after moving, I don’t know if that would have an impact.

NVW 0905: Are you in or out of state?

seniorgirl94: I think it’s worth it. I know two people that did Summer Start and really enjoyed meeting people early and kind of getting a leg up on knowing the campus. If you’re doing really productive work on your gap year I would probably keep doing that but if you’re just shooting the **** or just traveling, I would leave. You’ve been off for a full year… what’s two weeks early?

Thanks for all the great info! My son was admitted to COE for Aerospace Engineering and has applied to the Honors Program. We will be driving from NJ to attend the Admitted Students Day on February 15. On the calendar I see that it is WISE Admitted Students day. This is the only admitted students day that we are able to make the trip. If you know, is this day set aside solely for WiSE admitted students? We had no problem registering and received a confirmation as well. Son has no problem being the only guy on an all girl engineering tour if that’s the case as long as he is welcomed.

How and when can we expect invitation? D was admitted EA back in Dec. I just read someone talking about an event mid-February but we haven’t been invited. Any clue why? Is it college/major based?

Son received invitation post card sometime between Christmas and New Years and is specifically for the College of Engineering. In looking for that information I answered my own question and it turns out the date we are set to go is only for WISE-Spend A Day With State. So our alternate plans are to do a regular Freshman Info Session/Tour and the Engineering info session on the date we have already set as we will be on our way to UAH from there.

Do the majority of freshmen do the living and learning village?

Thanks 3boys mom – asked D last night if she got anything and she said yes, an email but the dates were at the start of lax season so she figured she couldn’t/wouldn’t go. Ugh.

We are planning a trip down mid-February so I’m going to sign up for the alt. program.

I’m from Eastern North Carolina. So yes, I’m in the State.

My son was just checking his outstanding applications (transcript missed the first EA deadline and was pushed back to 1/30 and account always said to check at 7:00 p.m. on 1/30) - his accout said he is accepted to AERO Engineering and the acceptance letter is in the mail! I guess they are releasing decisions early!

leftie17: No, not the majority. Some students do, but it’s not a big deal if you do or do not.

@ NJMom2017- mystery solved. Glad to help. Hoping for decent weather for our mid Feb trip.

@ threeofthree-Welcome to the NCSU club of Prospective Aero Engineers. Hoping our visit goes well and NCSU stays on the list as a contender. Application for honors college is in so more waiting to deal with. Although, we are out of state we have family just 6miles from campus.

Of the schools son received acceptances from thus far, from a Moms prospective I favor NCSU since they have by far shown the most interest in making the prospective student feel that they matter, I was pleasantly surprised that Son received a phone call at home from a University upperclassmen inquiring if there were any questions she may be able to answer. The gesture was welcomed and very nice but the caller was not an aerospace engineering major so only generic questions could be answered and son was so shocked to have been contacted he wasn’t exactly prepared with a list of questions. Either way the caller was pleasant and knowledgeable and welcomed Son to “the wolfpack”. He thought that was pretty cool. Son has since received his “WolfPack” packet containing an official acceptance letter, window decal and tshirt.

hi I just got accepted into state and im applying for housing right now. My accepted major is international economy and environment. Im confused about the villages because there isnt really a village that i qualify for or fit (except for the global one, but Im not really sure that I want to live with international students). So can I choose a dorm that has a village or do I have to pick one that doesnt? Central campus seems like the best area and Ive heard that tucker and owen are the best but ive also heard that they arent so good… (can I even get in there if im not fyc? because if i cant i dont want to waste 2/3 of my choices) I just want to live with people that work hard but also party hard too. I was thinking about metcaif if not owen and tucker…

ncstate2013: You don’t have to live in a village. It’s just an option for getting involved. They are not mandatory. Every dorm has rooms that are not in the LLV so you can live in any dorm.

You can live in Tucker or Owen if you’re not in FYC, but to increase your chances of getting in I would have a roommate that’s in FYC. Metcalf (or any of the tri-towers) is a good alternative. It’s in a good location and there are a good number of freshmen.

ncstatefreshman,

What is the political culture around campus? I plan on being a poli sci major so this generally affects me more than others.

mjkcarolina4: I think we’re pretty diverse, as I’ve seen groups representing Democrats, Republicans, and third party candidates (mainly Libertarians) as well. I think these groups are respected and active, so they are available for you to participate in, but I’ve never felt forced to share my beliefs about politics.

During the election, we were very active in making sure people were registered to vote and there was early voting at Talley Student Center for a week or two before election day. Voting between classes was really easy!

I would say that overall we’re pretty moderate but like every campus, you’re going to find people at all ends of the spectrum. With 11 political groups on campus ([Student Organization Resource Center @ NC State](http://ncsu.orgsync.com)) you can surely find a group to cater to your needs.

Hello everyone and happy Tuesday!

I just wanted to update everyone because the Princeton Review’s annual rankings of best value colleges just came out. We have jumped from 9th to 6th!

You can read an article about it here. GO PACK!

ncstatefreshman,

I have a couple questions about the dorm rooms…
Where do most freshman live on campus?
What are your thoughts on Avent Ferry and North Resident Hall?
Do you prefer suite style or hall style?
Are the bunks in the suite style dorms separable? I realllly prefer not having a bunk

Thanks :D
