I got recruited to CA. Yes there are plenty.

@PSU589 Congratulations!!!

Hello, do you know anything about the Information Science and Technology major?

I do not, but they have a huge building that is really nice and a lot of people do very well out of college on that major. That’s about the most I know, but it is popular and if you do well job placement should be easy.

@SAD1010 Thanks, several of my friends will also be placed there. You can go anywhere really.

Thank you very much

Good afternoon, @PSU589. Now that my daughter has completed the ALEKS math placement test, your thoughts on MATH 110 (Techniques of Calculus) and STAT 200 (Statistics), if possible. Thanks.

My son is an incoming freshman. He is very disciplined woth his eating. He weighs and cooks everything. Is there a kitchen accessible on the dorm floors? If so, which halls have them?

@PSU589 I am glad you enjoyed your experience at PSU. I am sorry you didn’t enjoy your experience at Gettysburg. Perhaps some of the things that attracted you to PSU wouldn’t be attractive to someone who would select a college like Gettysburg. For example I know of a former student at PSU who needed a recommendation from a professor after their first year to qualify for a special program. The student didn’t feel comfortable approaching a single professor since all of the first year classes had over 100 students in them and they didn’t feel like any professor really knew them and could write an accurate recommendation. On the other hand a student at Gettysburg when made aware of this situation said, I could have asked three of my professor’s for a recommendation after my first semester as I was in classes of only about 24 students and at least two of the professors had hosted our classes for dinner. Its all about what style works for you. Again, I am glad PSU worked for you but you have to admit it might not work for everyone…

@dygibbs stat is very easy, math110 is simple calculus, some find it very very hard others find it easy. overall i hated that class its a pain in the a**. not much else to say there. @caflis43 no there are not kitchens accessible. I do admit @beenthereanddone you are 100% right. it is not for everyone. Opposite environments. Just putting out how I saw it. Some may love that close knit community, but for me it was just creepy like high school.

Pollock SLO or East for my son.
Incoming freshman, biochemistry major, quiet science kid, but also wants to get involved and have a social life.
Heard Pollock is dated but so is most of East. Heard renovated East is beautiful if you can get it. East is traditional “freshman experience” but have heard from other parents dorm/floors range from quiet to party city. Pollock is more centrally located. My son put the BIOME in Pollock as first choice, then East renovated. Any advice?

How is the social life at penn state if someone does not want to be part of greek life? And is it easy for someone to get bored there since its in a more rural area?

And if I absolutely hate my roommate, what are the policies on moving out or switching roommates?

More of the students are not Greek than are, keep that in mind. Anyone who is bored at Penn State is not trying very hard to find something to do. There are bazillions of things to do on campus and in town, and let’s not forget you have classes too? 3 hrs in the classroom is supposed to translate to …15? out of class. Multiple by 4 or 5 classes… Neither of mine were Greek and had no problem finding like-minded happy people who weren’t interested in the mega-party scene.

There’s no reason to think you would hate your roommate, but if you did, you wouldn’t be the first person to officially or unofficially swap rooms. There is information about this on Housing, but it’s not simple and it’s not recommended.

There’s a room exchange board where you can negotiate a swap with someone else who wants to move out. Not sure on specifics as I’ve never used it.

With hundreds of clubs, there is something that will appeal to just about everyone.

My son is accepted to liberal arts/ Econ, 3.9WGPA 1450 SAT. Second guessing on not applying to Smeal. Can you transfer in or does Econ offer similar advantages to SMEAL. Thoughts?

What is the college of engineering like? Is it well regarded and would being at penn state with a engineering degree help with getting a job later on?

@limdmom: you can’t apply to Smeal from Econ pre-major. He’d have to be DUS (Penn State’s weird lingo for “undecided”).
Perhaps he can stay in Econ at first, join the Paterno Scholars SLO (SLO = living learning community) which would allow him to take the Schreyer first year seminar and Econ Honors (as a seminar instead of a huge class), switch to DUS at the end of his second semester…?
Basically, assuming no AP credit, Econ and Smeal Pre-major share, out of 10 1st year courses - 9 classes:
Math 110 (Applied calculus), SCM 200 or Stats 200 (stats for business or intro to stats), Econ 102-104, Foreign Language, either the Schreyer seminar or English 30+ CAS (Composition, Communication), a lab science, a humanities class. Big difference is that Smeal Premajors would take Management and that could only be taken if the student is in DUS or in Smeal already, however it can be taken during the 2nd year.

@MYOS1634 Thank you for that great info. Very much appreciated!!

Is it difficult to start new clubs/organizations? Also, does the university provide any funding for clubs?
