Asking for college suggestions

Hi all. I'm looking for college recommendations.

I am an international student
SATI: CR750,W750,M710 (composite score)
SATII: Lit 710, MathII 740, MathI, 690
GPA 3.61/4.00 (slacked off in last two years)

I also have a generous helping of extra curriculars.

My primary interest is Fine Art and my first choices are art schools but I'm also interested in studying in the context of a wider university/college. I'm looking for some schools that:

will give some, if even a little, consideration to my art supplement
have "strong" art departments
have a significant amount of financial aid for internationals.
have an intellectual/liberal arts bias

Currently i'm looking at Reed, Skidmore, Bennington, Occidental, Oberlin, Connecticut, Kenyon and Bard. Please let me know if you think there are any other schools i should be researching/interested in.

Thanks

Tufts has good connections with Art and International Students.

The downward trend in grades could hurt you.

But…you probably should apply to your list and a few safeties.

Do you need financial aid? Or can you pay full-freight? :)

I think he downward trend in my grades is the weakest part of my application. I do come from a different system though. my placement in my year is 12/120 and the highest GPA in my year was 3.91.

i will need the financial aid.

what do u recommend as a safety school?

Will look at Tufts.

skidmore sounds like a great fit. also NYU, although it would be slightly beenenth you, it seems like a great fit.

it’s hard to imagine NYU being “beneath” anyone. either way nyu doesnt offer any funding for my sort, not at the undergrad level at least.

Readers…

Do you know which of the OP’s choices give financial aid to internationals? Only certain schools do, so the OP needs to know which ones do.

OP…

How much FA do you need? How much can your family contribute? “Need” is determined by the university, not the family, so your choices “may” believe that your family can contribute more than they can.

I think UTexas gives aid to internationals, so does UVa.

What’s an OP? All of the schools on my initial list have given considerable amounts of funding to international students in the past (according to the internationalstudent.com website). I’ll be looking for about 20-30k/ year in aid which severely limits my options. I was hoping to find more schools like Bennington which as a result of it’s small size, limitted applicant pool and some what lower admissions standards would be more inclined to give me the financial aid i need.

OP = original post or original poster…for this thread, the OP is Kaelyn

I’ll be looking for about 20-30k/ year in aid which severely limits my options.

Since the cost to attend many/most of these privates is going to be $45-50k+, and you need $20-30k in aid, are you saying that your family can contribute the balance (about $25-30k each year)?

Your stats are great, so hopefully some schools will give you merit (do you know which ones will?)

Are you sure that all those schools give that much financial aid ($20-30k) to internationals? Is the aid they give mostly student loans? If so, do you have a co-signer for the loans?

Just to be on the safe side, I think that you need to apply to a financial safety that you’re **certain **will give you lots of aid or merit. I’m concerned that if you don’t, you could end up receiving a lot of FA packages in March/April that will either have big gaps or big loans in them (which will need co-signers).

I went to internationalstudent.com and although it does list the various schools that give FA to internationals, and it does say how much aid they give and how many int’l students they give aid to, it doesn’t say WHAT the aid is.

I realize that schools like the ivies give outright no-loan aid, but what about these other schools that claim to give large amounts of aid? Are they giving some grants, and mostly loans? Would such students end up with $100k in loans for undergrad?

On the same website, it says that loans for international students require a co-signer that is an American resident or citizen. Is that typically true?
