Hello! My school doesn’t offer any clubs and I am worried about my extracurricular profile. My school only has Student Government and National Junior Honor Society and I am apart of both. I am interested in Science (Biology and Anatomy) but I can find any opportunities near me. Do you know of anything I can participate in? (I am a 7th grade girl).
There are so many things you can do. Look online to see what free programs are running in your community. Look at areas that interest you and see if there are ways to learn more.
I would try to contact some teachers in your line of interest for an internship (unpaid ofc) or a scientist in your area they are looking for passionate students who will lead our generation so they’ll be more than glad to guide you.
If your school doesn’t offer any clubs, that’s probably something you should bring up in your application. You could say that your incentive to apply to private schools is because they offer much more opportunities that could help you expand further on your passions.
You probably meant that you “can’t find any opportunities nearby”. I suggest you to do a google search on competitions/research projects that focus on what you’re passionate about (like biology). Since right now we’re in a COVID lockdown, many organizations are hosting their competitions online, so anyone from anywhere could join.
Does your town have a science museum where you could volunteer?
The closest one is 30 minutes but they are closed due to COVID.
It’s really about how you spend your time. Schools know that to have impressive ECs as a 14 year old correlates highly to having a parent willing to drive you around.
So figure out what interests you and what’s doable. I know people who write letters to people who are isolated, for example. But you can also play an instrument, help younger students with homework – all of these still work with covid.
Do you enjoy drawing? How about a series anatomical drawings? Taking extra classes in biology or anatomy online. Starting a science fair at school. Forming your own club?
I love this idea! I appreciate it.
I do think you need to build ECs. But they do not have to expensive, involve a lot of drawing, necessarily be school based, etc. i think it may help a bit if they are interesting and it helps if they should commitment.
